2009 Land Rover Discovery 3

The 2009 Land Rover Discovery 3 will receive an array of exterior and interior upgrades to maintain its competitiveness in the premium, luxury all-purpose vehicle segment.

These changes include a re-profiled, body coloured front bumper, a revised rear bumper and wheel arches which are body coloured on SE and HSE models. The distinctive, asymmetric two-piece tailgate now comes with body coloured tailgate lift handle and clear-lens side indicators as standard across the range. The attention to detail continues with the revised "tungsten" coloured side vent and "tungsten" door, on the on SE and HSE models.

Roger Jory, Land Rover Australia General Manager, said: "With over 100 international awards to date, the Land Rover Discovery 3 has earned itself a reputation as the ultimate all purpose vehicle. The latest revisions add to an already class-leading package and build on the Discovery 3's unique position as one of the most versatile vehicles in the world. On-road refinement to rival executive saloons, flexibility to surpass people carriers and class-leading all terrain capability."

I purchased the Discovery 3 for my retirement and to undertake a major round Australia trip and have to say when I took delivery I thought this is the best car I had ever owned, three years and 50,000 kilometers down the track my experience includes, instrument pack faulty and replaced, air suspension faults, two new front differentials, tie rod replacement, RH front lower ball joint arm and ball joint replaced, second lower ball joint replaced, three wheel alignments, front window not working, loose wiring, indicators not working, loose wires, water leaking from sunroof, (twice), radio not switching off, radio complete fail, an intermittent fault with another window not working and countless stop light globe replacements. The vehicle has never been off road, always garaged. In the case of my previous (and much less expensive) vehicles, a Nissan Pathfinder, a Mitsubishi Pajero and a Toyota Land Cruiser, I never had the need to replace tyres under 80,000 km, (I have now been informed that one tyre is scrubbed out and requires replacement and 3 nearly worn out). In addition, I usually get 70,000 kms on a set of brakes, 31,000 kms and required replacement. I have always purchased new vehicles, and I have never suffered the litany of maintenance difficulties and inconvenience with any other vehicle, save this Discovery 3. I note from some recent advertising that the Discovery 3 TDV6 has won fourth year in succession both the “Best Large Diesel Wagon” and “Best Overall” category. I certainly purchased my vehicle on the basis of the Discovery 3 being awarded the “Best 4 wheel drive of the year award” and am bitterly disappointed. I have lost total confidence in the Discovery 3 and certainly would not contemplate any form of remote travel in the vehicle. Complaining gets you nowhere on the local scene and ended up going direct to the CEO of Tata Motors, who referred back to the UK who referred back to Australia with no effort by Land Rover to negotiate at any point about what has clearly been a poorly built vehicle. I guess next step is to advertise my experience on the back of the TDV6 and go to court.

I think you are just unfair in your judgement. I have owned one for the last 5 years with offroad drive at times and no complaints.

May be your car was faulty from start.

Since my first post the suspension system has failed twice requiring two new compressors and repairs to other damage caused to the Discovery when the second compressor failed. Had enough and sold the Discovery and Purchased a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Far from me being unfair, was it fair of Land Rover to sell me such a poorly designed and sub standard quality vehicle. Should I have regarded all the problems as "normal".

I have now done 215,000 in my now 2005 Disco 3 SE and yes I have changed ball joints, compressors, brake pads more often than other vehiles this size and it doesn't bother me. The terrain selector when in use applies the brakes when needed to indivdual wheels or all round to keep me out of a pickle when four wheel driving and for the weight of the vehicle not to use more pads while braking I'd rather be kept out of trouble. compresors are known to have about a 5 year life span. Some owners I know have gotten well over 5 and have confirmed their in their 7th year with no issues. but with features, ride quality and looks like these I'm sorry youv'e had a bad experiance.
