(L-R) Audi A3 cabriolet and BMW 1-series cabriolet
Audi A3 cabriolet vs BMW 1-series cabriolet

UK motoring magazine Autocar has released a video of a short comparison test between two of the newest entrants in the world of premium compact convertibles - the Audi A3 cabriolet and BMW 1-series convertible.

The all-new Audi A3 cabriolet went on sale in Europe earlier this year and is based on the A3 hatchback and features a lightweight fabric roof that can be opened hydraulically in just nine seconds. The design and shape of the car is very 'coupe-like' as opposed to the hatch which it is based on. (see more here).

The BMW 1-series has been on the market for a few years now and it was only late last year that the German car maker released a cabriolet version of the car after a hard-top coupe version was unveiled. (See more here).

In this video, the A3 cabriolet fitted with a 147 kW (200 hp) 2.0-litre TFSI unit goes up against the BMW 125i, which packs a 160 kW (218 hp) 3.0-litre straight six. Watch the video to see who comes out on top!

Audi TTS

German manufacturer Audi will debut its fastest TT yet at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show.

The Audi TTS features a tweaked 2.0-litre FSI turbocharged four-cylinder from the VW Golf GTi and Audi S3 under the bonnet and develops 200kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

Audi claims the all-wheel-drive TTS sprints from 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds when equipped with the optional S-tronic semi-automatic gearbox (Audi's version of VW's DSG) while the standard six-speed manual reaches 100km/h 0.2 seconds slower at 5.4 seconds.

To differentiate it from the bread and butter models, the TTS gets a new front apron incorporating larger intakes and 18-inch wheels (19-inch wheels available as an option) and a magnetic ride suspension that lowers the car by 10mm for improved cornering performance.

Unfortunately, Australia will get a detuned version of the TTS due to our hot climate with power down 4kW at 196kW. The TTS will go on sale - in coupe and convertible guises - in the second quarter of 2008.

Ultra hi-res images and press release to follow shortly.

Audi A3 Cabriolet

Most hatchbacks turned cabriolet/convertible tend to look a little off colour and unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the new Audi A3 Cabriolet has been able to buck this trend
