Japanese car maker Mitsubishi will end its Australian assembly operations in Adelaide at the end of March 2008 - some 38 years after the first locally produced Mitsubishi rolled off the production lines at Tonsley Park.
In an official statement on the Mitsubishi Australia website, president Rob McEniry said that the company has taken the decision to close the manufacturing plant in South Australia and cease production of the 380 passenger car in Australia at the end of March this year.

In the end, increasingly low demand from Australian consumers for large cars such as the 380 as they move towards smaller, more economic and specialised cars made this unavoidable.
Although Mitsubishi Motors and its full range of imported cars and commercial vehicles will remain in Australia, the closure will directly affect 930 employees who will consequently lose their jobs.
Mitsubishi Australia stressed that employees will receive very favourable separation packages based on those provided to the Lonsdale Engine Plant employees in 2005. Mitsubishi Motors Australia has ensured that all employee entitlements are protected and guaranteed when the plant ceases production at the end of March 2008.
