AIMS preview: Elfin 'Type 5'

September 22nd 2008 04:45
Elfin Type 5

Australian niche sports car company, Elfin, is set to debut a new model dubbed the 'Type 5' at the upcoming Australian International Motor Show in Sydney next month.

Powered by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine from the USDM Pontiac Solstice, the Type 5 is a lightweight (target weight of just 700kg) sports convertible with an emphasis on balance and handling over outright power, although an estimated 194 kW of power and 351Nm of torque won't see it lacking in that department either.

The new four-cylinder spiritually replaces the ten-year old Type III Clubman which was sold in either an owner-assembled kit or turn-key ready to drive.

The new Type 5 features a six-speed manual and advanced electronics including traction control, power steering, and anti-lock brakes.

Elfin suggests the target weight of 700kg will offer equal lap times to the V8, the place where it also expects many Elfin owners will realise the full potential of their sports cars.

Expected to be priced competitively at $60,000, the Type 5 - and its official name - will be officially unveiled at the AIMS which start on October 9.
