Porsche Cayenne GTS vs BMW X5


The humble SUV has come a long way from its rugged terrain days, in particular, in the area of driving dynamics so it comes as no surprise that some of today's SUVs are more suited to a racetrack than on a mountainous stretch of road.

The Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 are two such examples where you'll find prospective buyers discussing their on-road performance - sprint times, handling prowess etc. - rather than their off-road capabilities.




In this "Battle of the SUVs", the Fifth Gear team pits the new Porsche Cayenne GTS against the BMW X5 4.8i. Both are fitted with stonking V8 engines more suited to a sports car but while the GTS has more power, the X5 carries less weight which should make this duel rather interesting.

UK motoring authority AutoCar has test-driven three of the hottest high performance cars on the market back-to-back on a private racetrack.

In the yellow corner, we have the race-bred Porsche 911 GT3 - a razor sharp performance machine honed by Germany's finest; the E92 BMW M3 coupe with a fire-breathing 4.0-litre V8 engine takes its place in the white corner; and last but not least, we have arguably the most talked about car in the world right now - the all-conquering Nissan "Godzilla" GT-R.

Watch the following two part video to see who comes out on top in a battle between Germany and Japan's finest performance machines.
