Through the use of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, the BMW 5 Series Sedan offers the most powerful and fuel efficient engines in its class.

Topping the list is the 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 featuring High Precision Injection that generates a peak power of 300kW and maximum torque of 600Nm across a broad rev range between 1750 rpm and 4500rpm. Combined with the ultra-efficient 8-speed Sports Automatic transmission with steering wheel paddles for manual shifting, this provides the BMW 550i the ability to cover the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.0 seconds with a combined fuel consumption of 10.4 litres per 100km and.

BMW’s new 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo straight six cylinder engine, that made its debut in the 535i Gran Turismo now combines the power unit for the BMW 535i Sedan with High Precision Injection and fully variable VALVETRONIC valve control. This results in an engine that produces a maximum output of 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque with an outstanding combined fuel consumption of just 8.4 litres per 100km and accelerates from 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds. Like its V8 TwinPower Turbo sibling the 535i drives through the 8-speed Sports Automatic transmission.

Ongoing development of the naturally aspirated 3.0-litre straight six cylinder engine in the BMW 528i including weight optimisation and application of EfficientDynamics technology has improved fuel consumption over its predecessor in the 530i by 14 per cent. Generating 190kW of power and 310Nm of torque and mated to the standard 8-speed Automatic transmission, the BMW 528i offers combined fuel consumption of 8.0 litres per 100km with impressive acceleration covering 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds.

For even more frugal luxury motoring, BMW offers the 520d with the latest generation common rail direct injection 2.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. Continual improvement of this engine has resulted in an increase in power and torque to 135kW and 380Nm and a reduction in fuel consumption to just 5.2 litres per 100km compared to the previous generation 520d, making it easily the most fuel efficient model in its segment, as well as the fastest accelerating, a further testament to BMW EfficientDynamics.

Ever since the first generation BMW 5 Series Sedan made its debut in 1972, the car has had an enviable reputation for supreme driving dynamics and with the latest generation BMW has again delivered ultimate driving pleasure with an unparalleled degree of chassis control and technology.

Building on the sophisticated all-aluminium double wishbone front suspension and Integral V rear axle, the BMW 535i and 550i are fitted standard with Dynamic Driving Control that offers three modes of operation to enable the driver to adjust steering, throttle, transmission and DSC response for the optimum balance of ride comfort and handling according to individual preferences. In terms of the BMW 520d and 528i, Dynamic Driving Control becomes standard when either the 8-speed Sports Automatic transmission, Integral Active Steering or Dynamic Damper Control is specified.

The 520d and 528i are also both available with the optional Dynamic Damper Control that adds a fourth COMFORT mode of adjustment through the continuously variable damping as well as Dynamic Driving Control and Adaptive Drive.

The two turbocharged petrol variants 535i and 550i are able to take this level of control even further with the optional Adaptive Drive that combines Dynamic Damper Control with a Dynamic Drive stability management that acts on both front and rear anti-roll bars to quickly and precisely build up appropriate counter forces during cornering.

To further aid the high-speed agility and comfort and low speed manoeuvrability of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, all models can be fitted with the innovative Integral Active Steering that not only controls the front wheels but also offers active rear wheel steering to an angle up to 3.0 degrees.

Built at BMW Plant Dingolfing in Germany alongside the BMW 7 Series with which it shares its basic architecture, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is a stylish sporting luxury sedan that uses cutting edge, innovative technology to deliver class leading performance and efficiency and BMW’s hallmark ultimate driving pleasure.

2010 BMW F10 5 Series

German car maker BMW has officially unveiled the new generation 5 Series sedan in Munich today and first impressions are much better than its "Bangle-ised" predecessor.

The BMW F10 5 Series shares its newly developed vehicle architecture with the larger 7 Series luxury sedans as well as sharing extensive use of components to ensure highly efficient production with the highest standards of quality.

2010 BMW F10 5 Series

The 2010 BMW 5 Series Sedan are defined in archetypal BMW style by the long wheelbase and hood, short overhangs, aft-set greenhouse, and the coupe-like flowing roof-line. The slightly wedge-like shape of the body creates a sporty, forward-moving character. The fresh interpretation of BMW's signature "Hofmeister" kick at the bottom of the C-pillar further emphasises the dynamic looks of the car in profile.

At launch, the new 5 Series will be available with a choice of two engines - a V8 and an inline-6 petrol engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i features a twin turbocharged, direct injection, 4.4-litre V8 with BMW's "reverse-flow" technology developing 294 kW. The BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 221 kW. Both models can be specified with either a 6-speed manual transmission, BMW's new 8-speed automatic transmission, or new "Sport Automatic" 8-speed.

Joining the line-up later in the year is the 528i with a 177 kW inline-6 featuring lightweight magnesium-aluminum construction and VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology for efficiency and responsiveness.

Australian launch of the new-generation BMW 5 Series is expected in the 2nd quarter of 2010.

Highly advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies combine agile handling for the driver and a high standard of riding comfort for passengers. When equipped with the Sport Package, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

At launch, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be available with one V-8 and one inline-6 gasoline engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW's "reverse-flow" V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are featured in appropriate combinations on each model, including features such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, a gearshift point indicator, active cooling air flaps, and on-demand operation of engine accessory drives. Lightweight materials are used intelligently to balance the vehicle and lower its overall weight. For example, components such as doors, hood, front fenders, and suspension assemblies are made of aluminum.

Innovative driver assistance systems.

The driver assistance systems offered with the new 5 Series include an all-new Parking Assistant, Top View cameras, and Frontal Collision Warning with application of the brakes when ordered with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go. Other driver assistance features available include Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, a Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection.

Joint development and production together with the BMW 7 Series.

The world debut of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan opens up the latest chapter in a truly impressive story of success. In the course of five model generations, overall sales of the BMW 5 Series already amount to more than 5.5 million units. Now the new model is based on a newly developed vehicle architecture also featured in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans.

Joint production of the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the BMW 7 Series at BMW Plant Dingolfing, together with the extensive use of shared components, ensures highly efficient production with the highest standards of quality.
