Dodge Viper ACR: ZR1 and GT-R beater?

August 29th 2008 05:15
Dodge Viper ACR

The venomous Dodge Viper ACR has dislodged the Corvette ZR1 off the Nurburgring time charts with a jaw-dropping 7:22.10 run around the famous track - more than 4 seconds faster than what the ZR1 could muster back in June.

Piloted by FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) driver Tom Coronel, the Dodge Viper ACR was completely stock but fitted with the no-cost option 'Hard Core package' that sheds a further 40 pounds off the kerb weight with the elimination of the audio system, trunk carpet, rear cabin sound insulation, tyre inflator kit, bonnet insulator, and steel battery cover. The only non-standard item fitted to the car was a Racetech bucket seat with six-point harness for safety purposes.

Whether this run is official or not, people will argue that the Dodge Viper ACR is essentially a race-track ready version of the stock Viper and barely road legal in stock form to fairly compete with the likes of the Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R. Not unless these two also has access to adjustable aerodynamics and suspension, plus R compound tyres.

For well over a decade, Chrysler has been thrilling car enthusiasts with the Dodge Viper muscle car which debuted in 1992 with a 8.0-litre V10 engine.

Some sixteen years later - the fourth generation Dodge Viper SRT-10 packs almost an extra half a litre in engine capacity to 8.4-litres (V10) and 447 kW of American muscle - Chrysler is celebrating a hefty milestone with the 25,000th Dodge Viper produced at the company's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, USA.

This special 25,000th commemorative model will be awarded to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kurt Busch for recognition of his racing accomplishments as the top Dodge driver in 2007 while an appropriately big bash will be held at the same plant in honour of this milestone.
