Don't You Want to Park Your Own Car?
May 21st 2007 02:02
Does anyone really want to drive a car that parks itself? One of the great pleasures of driving is well, driving. The idea is to "decrease the driver’s workload". I actually like parking. I take great pride in getting that perfect fit. Should this be taken from me?
Somehow giving the driver less driving to do seems like giving the driving more opportunity to relax and thus decrease their level of alertness. Drivers may become too relaxed, which may lower their reaction time and ability to “think on their seat”.
What about driver’s tests? Will new drivers be expected to actually drive? Or will they just need to be proficient in pushing buttons? Perhaps the future cars will drive like airplanes. The steering wheel and shift sticks will be replaced with flashing control panels. Men have trouble letting go of the remote control while watching TV. How easily will they accept a “decreased work load” while driving? I think when I am on the road or sidewalk for that matter, I would feel much safer if I know that the cars have a competent alert driver behind the wheel who actually knows how to drive, and park. How do you like the idea of self-parking cars
