Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

UK motoring journal, AutoCar, has reported that prestige car maker Bugatti plans to replace the ultra-exclusive Veyron supercar in 2012 with a model that boasts at least equal exclusivity and performance as the Veyron.

Speaking to Bugatti boss Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen, AutoCar can confirm that the company will replace the Veyron supercar - around 2012 - with another ultra high-end model. This is in contrary to the recent speculation that Bugatti would be dissolved when production of the Veyron ends.

While planning for the new model is still very much in its infancy, the possibility of a luxury saloon to rival the Rolls-Royce Phantom has been given some thought plus possible advanced biofuel technology and even diesel powertrains.

What can be confirmed is that Bugatti is very much keen on staying at the pinnacle of motoring with their next model.

“We will be staying on top of everybody else and we will not be producing a smaller, or cheaper car and we will not be moving volumes up. Bugatti customers are very extreme people,” said Bugatti boss Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen.

But this isn't the end of the venerable Veyron just yet with rumours of a more powerful 'GT' version in the works. The nature of the Veyron's turbocharged engine means that there are still ways to extra even more power from the W16 powerplant with Bugatti engineering boss, Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber saying that "1106lb ft of torque" is very much attainable.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

The first - chassis no.1 - Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport has been auctioned off for US$2.95 million at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance over the weekend.

As the highly sought after first vehicle - out of 150 only - to roll off the production line, Bugatti had taken the decision to donate this specific car to charity. In the end, it took the winning bidder a staggering $2.95 million to own the first ever Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport - $900,000 more than its original price.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport features a unique removable roof along with the same 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder, double V engine generating 1,001 bhp as its hard-top sibling. It is capable of reaching 100km/h from rest in 2.5 seconds and onto a top speed of 407 km/h (with the roof on). Speeds of up to 360 km/h are still possible with the roof off while the temporary 'umbrella' cloth roof further limits the Veyron’s top speed to 130 km/h.

The winning bidder of chassis no.1 will now be invited to the Bugatti factory to specify his Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport to his/her exact requirements.
