AIMS: Audi R8
November 13th 2007 07:30
The Audi stand was amongst the busiest at the Australian International Motor Show with the German manufacturer debuting no less than three gorgeous new models for the Australian market.
At the centre of attention (and much drooling) was the stunningly gorgeous Audi 'supercar' - the R8. Incorporating the name and the genes of the five-time Le Mans winner, the Audi R8 features a mid-mounted 309kW (420 bhp) 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine.
Built as a supercar that can be driven daily, the R8 is at the very least on par with its closest rival, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, in terms of performance, but it's sleek lines, fantastic proportions and muscular flanks makes its German rival look pedestrian at best.
Interior-wise, the R8 wins by a country mile. Audi's attention to detail and quality of materials are second to none thus creating a cockpit that is plush and driver focused - Porsche (and other manufacturers) can learn a lesson or two here.
And a much deserved 'thank you' goes out to the folks at Audi for not alienating its potential customers and fans by setting up a barricade of sorts between us and the R8 - it made getting up close and personal with the gorgeous car and taking detailed pictures a breeze.
