International Engine of the Year awards 2008
May 8th 2008 11:15
German car maker BMW has continued its dominance at the International Engine of the Year awards by taking six gongs out of a possible 11.
BMW's brilliant 3.0-litre twin turbo engine which powers the 135i, 335i and X6 won the coveted prize of International Engine of the Year for the second successive year. The engine amassed an impressive 380 points from a judging panel of 65 renowned motoring journalists from 32 countries, more than 100 points ahead of the second place Volkswagen TSI engine.
The judges - including John Carey from Australia's Wheels magazine who said the unit is “proof that BMW pushes the boundaries of engine technology more than any other manufacturer” - were wowed by its sheer performance, or recognised the significance of the debut of BMW’s high-precision direct-injection system, which helps to maximise performance and fuel economy by precisely dosing the air-fuel mix. Adoption of the system also enables a higher compression ratio (10.2:1) for better fuel economy as well as a more efficient method of combustion chamber cooling.
