Ferrari has become the first manufacturer to unveil their challenger for the 2008 Formula 1championship - the F2008.

Codenamed internally by the Prancing Horse as the 659, the 2008 car features a raft of modifications in-line with the new rule changes, namely, a new electronic system to be used by all teams, known as SECU (Standard Electronic Control Unit) and produced by MES (McLaren Electronic Systems).

It consists of a single control unit and a software system, the development of which ends as the season begins. Other areas affected by rule changes are: gearbox, which must be used for four consecutive events; safety, with the introduction of higher side protection around the driver's helmet; materials, with a limit to the type of composites that can be used. As a result of these rules, there has been an increase in the weight of the car.

All aerodynamic surfaces have been completely revised, however the current version will be replaced by a completely different configuration in time for the first race. In fact, an intensive and all encompassing development programme is planned to run throughout the season. The monococque has been further cut away under the driver's legs and the side pods and engine cover are more tapered. The suspension system has been reworked and developed around the new aerodynamics.

Alongside the introduction of the SECU, driver aids such as traction control and engine breaking and the electronically assisted starting system have been removed meaning that management of the differential, engine and gearchange are much simpler.

Ferrari

Ferrari GM Amedeo Felisa and Brembo Chairman Alberto Bombassei announced that Brembo brakes featuring carbon ceramic material (CCM) discs will be provided as standard on the entire Ferrari range from 2008 onwards.

Previously an expensive optional extra, carbon ceramic brakes offer an array of advantages in terms of improved braking performance, durability and reduction in unsprung weight.

The Official Ferrari Press Release:

Braking system with Carbon Ceramic Material (CCM) discs

Brakes featuring CCM discs offer much more responsive braking as well as consistently excellent performance in intensive use. One of the most obvious advantages to adopting them is their exceptional fade resistance - fade in fact compromises the driver's feeling of control when it comes to the pressure required on the brake pedal and responsiveness.

The CCM discs have a longer life under normal conditions, a fact that has clear financial advantages. Furthermore, even with continual track use, CCM brakes offer greater resistance to wear for better durability on track. The CCM braking system also cuts around 15 kg off the car's total weight which not only improves overall performance but also reduces unsprung mass and thus improves vehicle dynamics and ride comfort.

On the 430 Scuderia in particular, the CCM braking system is specifically designed for the car and has unique brake dimensions which are aligned with the car's extreme performance characteristics. The diameter of the front discs has been increased ( 18 mm vs the F430) which offers an improved effective radius and thus more efficient braking. Combined with specific 6-pot callipers, the front brake discs dissipate the extra heat created by the higher performance delivered by the 430 Scuderia.
