Champagne

Pop the bubbly and give yourselves a pat on the back, Australia!

Australia surpassed the milestone of one million new car sales for the first time ever in 2007 with official sales figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) at 1,049,982.

The milestone was tantalisingly close to being broken in the past two years but the breakthrough finally came in 2007 with Japanese manufacturer leading the way, accounting for 22.5% of all vehicles sold in Australia in 2007 thus securing the mantle of "Australia's most popular car maker" for the fifth consecutive year.

Holden and Ford were the second and third most popular brand in Australia with a 14% and 10.3% market share respectively.

A delighted FCAI chief Andrew McKeller says Australia’s new car market is now one of the healthiest in the world.

“One million new motor vehicles sales in a country of 21 million people is an impressive achievement by the Australian automotive industry - and ranks as one of the highest rates of new car purchase in the developed world.”

The most popular car segments in 2007 were:

1. Small cars 232,388 ( 5.9%)
2. Large cars 139,677 ( 2.3%)
3. Light cars 127,981 ( 10.2%)
4. Medium cars 92,579 ( 5.6%)
5. Compact 4WDs 90,330 ( 19.4%)
6. Medium 4WDs 74,434 ( 21.3%)
7. Luxury 4WDs 20,042 ( 9.3%)
8. Sports cars 18,936 ( 18.8%)
9. People-movers 16,202 ( 4.9%)
10. Large 4WDs 13,370 (-13.6%)
11. Upper large cars 9,346 ( 27.4%)
