Honda boss laments lack of sports cars
January 31st 2007 03:35
Honda Australia's managing director Toshio Iwamoto has said: "We really miss the sporty models, the sporty reputation we had." to drive.com.au at the Australian launch of the all-new Honda CR-V 4WD.
"We need some spice in our range...but it looks like, for a couple of years, we have to survive on bread and butter models." he added.
This is good and bad news for Honda enthusiasts.
Good in the sense that the managing director of Honda Australia actually acknowledges how far the manfacturer has fallen behind in terms of sports car pedigree here in Australia when compared with yester-year (think the Civic/Integra/Prelude VTi-R models, the Integra Type R, S2000 and NSX).
But bad in the sense that Honda's current plan is to expand its sales to reach the 80,000 mark before 2010 so it's going to be another while yet before we see a healthy line-up of Honda performance cars here in Australia.
Iwamoto, however, did mention the possibility of bringing in a limited number of the high performance, 3-dr Civic Type R model from the Swindon plant in the UK.
Hmmmmm...I won't believe it until I see it!
