Nissan GT-R Nurburgring

The all-new Nissan GT-R - affectionately known here as the 'Godzilla' - has cracked the 7min 30sec mark at the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany with a blistering time of 7min and 29seconds.

Previously, the GT-R lapped the famous racetrack in an impressive time of 7min and 38sec during testing but GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki knew there were more precious seconds to be shaved from that time given the dampness of the track at the time.

So Suzuki returned to the 'ring in mid-April with a JDM-spec base specification car fitted with stock standard tyres and was greeted with a nice, dry track. The GT-R revelled in the near ideal conditions and proceeded to post a stunning time of 7min and 29sec - one of the fastest times for a production car ever!

Kazutoshi Mizuno, Nissan’s chief vehicle engineer said: "At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds,

“Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere - I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”

WIth Australian prices tipped to be around the $150,000 - $170,000 mark when it eventually goes on sale here, it might not be 'accessible to anyone' but it certainly is a HUGE bargain for a car that boasts Ferrari/Lamborghini/Porsche beating performance.

The Official Nissan Press Release:

GT-R ACHIEVES UNDER 7:30 AT NÜRBURGRING
- GT-R among the fastest ever production road cars at the 'Ring' -

Nissan today announced that its GT-R supercar achieved a lap time at the infamous Nürburgring in Germany of seven minutes and 29 seconds. Recorded on April 16 and 17, the GT-R used was a base specification car and fitted with the standard Japanese market tyres. Driven by GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki, this latest lap time beats the previous fastest time for the GT-R by nine seconds.

The previous best lap time for GT-R of 7:38, also driven by Suzuki, was one of the fastest laps achieved by a production car despite conditions being slightly damp on two corners.

"At last year's testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R. "Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise."

Deliveries of the all-new GT-R began in Japan in December 2007. Sales in the US and Canada start in July and extend to Europe and other markets over the next 12 months.

2008 Nissan GT-R
Goes fast and sells fast too!

Car nuts over in the UK have understandably gone bonkers over the awesome Nissan GT-R with news that Nissan (UK) racked up approximately 700 customer deposits within the first 48 hours after accepting pre-order reservations for the Japanese supercar.

It is, however, an uphill battle for Nissan to meet overwhelming customer demand on a global scale because certain elements of the GT-R's engine is hand built thus limiting production to roughly 1000 units per month.

Paul Willcox, Managing Director Nissan Motor (GB) Limited said: “The dealer order line lit-up on the 2 April with an unprecedented amount of orders being placed. Waiting lists are not unusual to have for a vehicle of such high performance, specification and value but there is a limit that people will be prepared to wait. In order to meet demand we are now starting to negotiate vigorously with Nissan Europe to secure further volume from our production facility in Tochigi Japan.”

The UK is one of the first markets to officially sell the Nissan GT-R after Japan and the US with prices starting from £52,900 and is available in three trim levels: Base, Premium Edition and Black Edition. First customer deliveries are expected in March 2009.

Who would bet against a similar situation occurring in Australia when the Godzilla goes on sale locally?
