Nissan ECO pedal

Japanese car maker Nissan has unveiled the ECO Pedal, an innovative new technology designed to assist drivers to become more fuel-efficient by utilising a counter push-back control mechanism to monitor excess pressure when and if a driver is stepping too hard on the throttle thus informing drivers that they could be using more fuel than required.

An eco-driving indicator integrated into the instrument panel feeds drivers with real-time fuel consumption levels to help improve driving behaviour while the ECO Pedal system itself can be turned on or off by the driver.

Research conducted by Nissan has shown that by using the ECO Pedal drive system, drivers can improve fuel efficiency by 5-10%, depending on driving conditions.

The ECO Pedal system is fed data on the rate of fuel consumption and transmission efficiency during acceleration and cruising, and then calculates the optimum acceleration rate. When the driver exerts excess pressure on the accelerator, the system counteracts with the pedal push-back control mechanism.

At the same time, the eco-driving indicator incorporated on the instrument panel indicates the optimal level for fuel-efficient driving. Driving within the optimal fuel consumption range, the indicator is green. It begins to flash when it detects increased acceleration before reaching the fuel consumption threshold and finally turns amber to advise the driver of their driving behaviour.

Nissan GT-R Nurburgring

The all-new Nissan GT-R - affectionately known here as the 'Godzilla' - has cracked the 7min 30sec mark at the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany with a blistering time of 7min and 29seconds.

Previously, the GT-R lapped the famous racetrack in an impressive time of 7min and 38sec during testing but GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki knew there were more precious seconds to be shaved from that time given the dampness of the track at the time.

So Suzuki returned to the 'ring in mid-April with a JDM-spec base specification car fitted with stock standard tyres and was greeted with a nice, dry track. The GT-R revelled in the near ideal conditions and proceeded to post a stunning time of 7min and 29sec - one of the fastest times for a production car ever!

Kazutoshi Mizuno, Nissan’s chief vehicle engineer said: "At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds,

“Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere - I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”

WIth Australian prices tipped to be around the $150,000 - $170,000 mark when it eventually goes on sale here, it might not be 'accessible to anyone' but it certainly is a HUGE bargain for a car that boasts Ferrari/Lamborghini/Porsche beating performance.

The Official Nissan Press Release:

GT-R ACHIEVES UNDER 7:30 AT NÜRBURGRING
- GT-R among the fastest ever production road cars at the 'Ring' -

Nissan today announced that its GT-R supercar achieved a lap time at the infamous Nürburgring in Germany of seven minutes and 29 seconds. Recorded on April 16 and 17, the GT-R used was a base specification car and fitted with the standard Japanese market tyres. Driven by GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki, this latest lap time beats the previous fastest time for the GT-R by nine seconds.

The previous best lap time for GT-R of 7:38, also driven by Suzuki, was one of the fastest laps achieved by a production car despite conditions being slightly damp on two corners.

"At last year's testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R. "Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise."

Deliveries of the all-new GT-R began in Japan in December 2007. Sales in the US and Canada start in July and extend to Europe and other markets over the next 12 months.
