The Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) have awarded five stars to the Hyundai i30, Mitsubishi Lancer and Renault Laguna III for occupant protection in their latest vehicle crash report.

The Hyundai i30 hatchback achieved an overall score of 32.54 out of 37 and was commended for the passenger compartment's ability to hold its shape well in a collision. Despite protection from serious leg injury was marginal for the driver plus a slight risk of serious abdomen injury for the driver, the vehicle still managed to score 15.57 out of 16 in the side impact crash test where an additional two points were earned in the optional pole test.

The Mitsubishi Lancer scored 33.56 out of 37 points in this assessment and although there was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver, all other injury measurements were good. Last but not least, the Renault Laguna III achieved an overall score of 35.91 out of 37 and despite a door opening during the crash, injury values were all good.

Front, side and head airbags were fitted as standard on all three vehicles.

Reliving Past Glory

Renault hope this might give them a surge at Silverstone

If anyone saw the last F1 at Magny-Cours last night you would have noticed Ferrari's 1-2 finish signifying what might be the beginning of a dominant resurgence over Mclaren and the rest of the field. You might have also noticed that Alonso was driving with his balls to the wall but it was all for zilch in the end as luck and his strategy didn't pay dividends, even though he completed one of the best overtaking manouver's seen in recent times.

But Renault could claim a resurgence of sorts of their own, with Giancarlo Fisichella landing himself a 6th place behind two Ferrari's, one McLaren and two BMW's. These three have been at the pointy end of the field for most of the season and it seems Renault is showing some signs of promise for the second half of the season, even if it is slow going.

For the Silverstone race which is next on the list, Renault have decked out a R26 in the same livery as the old RS01. Looking much like a bee, it has been dubbed the 'Yellow Teapot' and will be on display all weekend at Silverstone.

Featuring a turbocharged V6, reliability was the biggest hurdle with these engines

The British public have always taken a fancy to the Yellow Teapot and Renault is playing this up, maybe in a hope to recapture their past form, even from a year ago, to spur their team onto better things this season. Interestingly enough the RS01 only finished 5 races in 1978, but it was the later evolutions of the idea that eventually lead to a number of successfully race cars, wins and seasons. F1 is always full of innovation, and it was Renault and the RS01 that started the whole turbocharged era and we can only be eternally grateful for their time, effort and imagination.
