New top gear for VW's DSG gear-box
December 21st 2007 10:30
Volkswagen's brilliant direct-shift gearbox (DSG) has just received an upgrade and will now get 7 gears (instead of 6) with the Golf 1.4 TSI petrol and 1.9 TDI diesel models to be the first to get this new gearbox.
Besides having an extra cog, the 7-speed DSG also has two new features. It will be the first front-transverse installed seven-speed DSG and first to run dry clutches. The benefits of running a dry system gives the newest DSG greater efficiency and ability to handle more torque (up to 250Nm).
The result is increased efficienty (0.7L/100km better fuel economy) than its predecessor when paired with the same 1.9L diesel motor. All DSG-equipped models will also come standard with hill-start assist.
Bizarrely, the current Golf GTI and R32 has 280Nm and 320Nm of torque respectively which means the new 7-speed DSG would be unsuitable for these models?
