2010 BMW F10 5 Series

German car maker BMW has officially unveiled the new generation 5 Series sedan in Munich today and first impressions are much better than its "Bangle-ised" predecessor.

The BMW F10 5 Series shares its newly developed vehicle architecture with the larger 7 Series luxury sedans as well as sharing extensive use of components to ensure highly efficient production with the highest standards of quality.

2010 BMW F10 5 Series

The 2010 BMW 5 Series Sedan are defined in archetypal BMW style by the long wheelbase and hood, short overhangs, aft-set greenhouse, and the coupe-like flowing roof-line. The slightly wedge-like shape of the body creates a sporty, forward-moving character. The fresh interpretation of BMW's signature "Hofmeister" kick at the bottom of the C-pillar further emphasises the dynamic looks of the car in profile.

At launch, the new 5 Series will be available with a choice of two engines - a V8 and an inline-6 petrol engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i features a twin turbocharged, direct injection, 4.4-litre V8 with BMW's "reverse-flow" technology developing 294 kW. The BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 221 kW. Both models can be specified with either a 6-speed manual transmission, BMW's new 8-speed automatic transmission, or new "Sport Automatic" 8-speed.

Joining the line-up later in the year is the 528i with a 177 kW inline-6 featuring lightweight magnesium-aluminum construction and VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology for efficiency and responsiveness.

Australian launch of the new-generation BMW 5 Series is expected in the 2nd quarter of 2010.

The Official BMW Press Release:

THE NEW 6th GENERATION BMW 5 SERIES UNVEILED IN MUNICH

Design: charismatic and athletic.

With the longest wheelbase in the segment, a long and sleek hood, short overhangs, and a coupe-like roofline, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan stands out clearly from the competition. Overall, the aesthetic looks of the car are achieved through balanced proportions. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward, in the stylish and elegant side view of the car, and at the muscular rear end.

Within the interior, precise functionality and a fresh ambience come together in perfect harmony, unmistakable style, and clear orientation to the driver.

Driving experience: benchmark dynamics and exceptional comfort.

Highly advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies combine agile handling for the driver and a high standard of riding comfort for passengers. When equipped with the Sport Package, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

At launch, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be available with one V-8 and one inline-6 gasoline engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW's "reverse-flow" V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. The 535i and 550i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission, BMW's new 8-speed automatic transmission, or new "Sport Automatic" 8-speed.

Later, the BMW 528i will debut with a 240 hp inline-6 featuring lightweight magnesium-aluminum construction and VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology for efficiency and unparalleled responsiveness.

BMW EfficientDynamics: BMW 5 Series increasing the lead.

BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are featured in appropriate combinations on each model, including features such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, a gearshift point indicator, active cooling air flaps, and on-demand operation of engine accessory drives. Lightweight materials are used intelligently to balance the vehicle and lower its overall weight. For example, components such as doors, hood, front fenders, and suspension assemblies are made of aluminum.

Innovative driver assistance systems.

The driver assistance systems offered with the new 5 Series include an all-new Parking Assistant, Top View cameras, and Frontal Collision Warning with application of the brakes when ordered with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go. Other driver assistance features available include Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, a Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection.

Joint development and production together with the BMW 7 Series.

The world debut of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan opens up the latest chapter in a truly impressive story of success. In the course of five model generations, overall sales of the BMW 5 Series already amount to more than 5.5 million units. Now the new model is based on a newly developed vehicle architecture also featured in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans.

Joint production of the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the BMW 7 Series at BMW Plant Dingolfing, together with the extensive use of shared components, ensures highly efficient production with the highest standards of quality.

2009 BMW M3 sedan Australian pricing

November 17th 2008 02:30
2009 BMW M3 sedan

For the first time ever - in Australia, at least - BMW is launching a sedan version of its M3 high performance vehicle on our shores with sales officially starting this weekend.

Joining the existing coupe and new convertible in the BMW line-up, cashed up driving enthusiasts will have access to the full range of M3 models in Australia for the first time. Powered by the same 4.0-litre V8 engine producing 309 kW and 400 Nm of torque and revving to a stratospheric 8,400 rpm red line, the BMW M3 sedan adds the most practical of body shells - complete with five seats and substantial luggage capacity - for those that may have been forced to look beyond the M3 for practicality issues in the past.

2009 BMW M3 sedan

Tom Noble, General Manager, Marketing, BMW Group Australia, said: “The arrival of the BMW M3 Sedan in Australia is a win for drivers who have longed for the practicality of a four-door/five seat sedan that delivers the punch and excitement of the M3 Coupé."

The BMW M3 Sedan sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds (4.7s for M-DCT transmission) - fractionally slower than the lighter coupe version - and uses just 12.4L / 100 km (11.9L / 100km - M-DCT transmission) on the combined cycle in manual transmission guise.

Several new features will make its way onto the M3 sedan and headlining this list is Brake Energy Regeneration, similar to that which will be applied to Formula 1 race cars in the 2009 season, which works by collecting energy on overrun or under braking to recharge the vehicle’s battery, allowing the absolute maximum engine power be delivered to acceleration rather than being diverted to power electrical systems.

What's more? The new BMW M3 sedan will also be the cheapest of the trio with a price tag from $145,000 plus dealer delivery and statutory charges.

The Official BMW Australia Press Release:

BMW M3 Sedan: The Perfect Car for Both the Heart and the Head

The most passionately revered name in the BMW M playbook is about to be conferred on the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, as for the first time ever, a four-door BMW M3 arrives in Australia.

The BMW M3 Sedan is a car that both the heart and the head will be able to agree on.

Powered by the unique V8, 4.0-litre, 309 kW engine, producing 400 Nm of torque and revving to a stratospheric 8,400 rpm red line, the BMW M3 Sedan adds the most practical of body shells complete with five seats and substantial luggage capacity, so even more passengers can enjoy this magnificent, race-bred engine on full song.

BMW has never offered the M3 Sedan in Australia before. There was no Sedan in the previous E46 generation model range, and in the E36 generation, only Coupé and Convertible versions of the M3 came to Australia.

The arrival of the M3 Sedan in November, just weeks after the first M3 Convertibles, means BMW high-performance enthusiasts will access to the full range of M3 models.

The new BMW M3 Sedan will be priced from $145,000 plus dealer delivery and statutory charges.

The BMW M3 Sedan sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and uses just 12.4-litres of petrol per 100 km on the combined cycle in manual transmission guise.

Equipped with the seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, the M3 Sedan rushes from 0-100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. It also uses less fuel than the manual transmission car, at 11.9l/100km.

The BMW M3 Sedan rides on special M 18-inch light alloy wheels shod with 245/40 front and 265/40 ZR 18 tyres, while 19-inch light alloy wheels are optional, fitted with 245/35 front and 265/35 ZR 19 tyres.

The new BMW M3 Coupé, launched a year ago in Australia has been a huge success to date, with around 500 cars delivered in the past 12 months.

The ability of the M3 Coupé to tailor the driving experience exactly to the driver’s needs, or the demands of the road or track, is also available in the M3 Sedan. Some of these features are only available on BMW M3 models and not available elsewhere in the market, such as Electronic Damper Control and MDrive.

The BMW M3 Sedan is not only a high-performance sports machine, but comes exceptionally well equipped with luxury features such as Professional Navigation with an 8.8-inch full colour monitor, TV, Voice Recognition, preparation for Bluetooth mobile connection, LOGIC7 HIFI system, Adaptive bi-Xenon headlights, metallic paint, Novillo Leather upholstery, powered and heated M Sport seats with memory functions, and backrest width adjustment and lumbar support.

A unique feature of the M3 range, and available for the first time on a BMW Sedan in Australia, is Brake Energy Regeneration, similar to that which will be applied to Formula 1 race cars in the 2009 season.

Brake Energy Regeneration collects energy on overrun or under braking to recharge the vehicle’s battery, allowing the absolute maximum engine power be delivered to acceleration rather than being diverted to power electrical systems.

The new BMW M3 Sedan goes on sale on 22nd November 2008.

“The arrival of the BMW M3 Sedan in Australia is a win for drivers who have longed for the practicality of a four-door/five seat sedan that delivers the punch and excitement of the M3 Coupé,” said Tom Noble, General Manager, Marketing, BMW Group Australia.

“The M3 Sedan is truly the car that answers the call of the heart and the considerations of the head.

“With its mighty engine and drivetrain package borrowed from the award-winning M3 Coupé we are certain the BMW M3 Sedan is a classic in the making,” Tom said.

BMW M3 Range

* BMW M3 Sedan: $145,000
* BMW M3 Coupé: $162,901
* BMW M3 Convertible: $176,142
