Mini John Cooper Works Challenge Edition

In recognition of the pure pedigree that underpins MINI, the release of the MINI John Cooper Challenge Edition draws John Cooper Works even closer to the MINI CHALLENGE race car, both in its appearance and performance.

The MINI John Cooper Works Challenge Edition is powered by the same powerplant as the MINI CHALLENGE race cars; delivering 155 kW from a twin-scroll turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. Developing a maximum of 260 Nm of torque (280 Nm torque available during Overboost) the MINI John Cooper works propels from 0-100km/h in just 6.5 seconds.

Exclusive to the Australian market, the John Cooper Works Challenge Edition includes the following features over the already highly optioned MINI John Cooper Works model: John Cooper Works aerodynamics package consisting of front, rear and side aprons, John Cooper Works Carbon spoiler, John Cooper Works Aluminium cross brace, John Cooper Works Alcantara and Carbon steering wheel, John Cooper Works Carbon gearshift knob with Alcantara shroud, John Cooper Works Carbon handbrake lever with Alcantara surround and unique Challenge Edition badging.

The Challenge Edition is available with all new MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop, Clubman or Cabrio models. Representing over $7,000 worth of value, the Challenge Edition is available for a strictly limited time as a $2,500 option.

A testament to the strength and success of the MINI Challenge race series, last year the sales of MINI John Cooper Works reach unprecedented heights, accounting for 26 percent of MINI Cooper S Hardtop sales and 10 per cent of the entire model range.

The 2010 MINI Challenge season kicks off in March with the categories debut at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

MINI Cooper D confirmed for Australia

January 21st 2009 22:30
MINI Cooper D

BMW Australia has confirmed that a diesel version of the popular MINI Cooper will arrive on our shores midway through 2009. The sporty diesel car will become Australia’s cleanest car, producing fewer CO2 emissions than hybrid cars on sale in the country, yet still provides very perky performance from its 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engine.

The MINI Cooper D comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, and a six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option.

Fitted with several MINIMALISM features (MINI’s version of BMW EfficientDynamics), including the Auto Start Stop function, the MINI Cooper D's engine will switch itself off in traffic jams or at the lights, instead of idling, wasting fuel.

Further MINIMALISM features are Brake Energy Regeneration, previously only available on the BMW M3, and a Shift Point Display that prompts the driver to make upshifts at the most economical time.

In addition, the MINI Cooper D has a streamlined underbody aerodynamic panel for reduced drag, and on-demand functioning ancillaries, such as Electric Power Assisted Steering, a switchable water pump, and volume flow regulated oil pump. All these features serve to reduce fuel consumption.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel engine develops 80 kW and 240 Nm of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,000 rpm - 70 percent of which is available at just 1,250 rpm.

Like the MINI Cooper S engines, the lightweight (123.5 kg) MINI Cooper D engine also offers a torque “Overboost” feature. This injection of an extra 20 Nm of grunt punts peak torque to 260 Nm at short notice, for even swifter overtaking. The “Overboost” is accessed by pressing the accelerator pedal to the metal.

The MINI Cooper D is the fastest accelerating 1.6-litre diesel powered car in the class in Australia, and the most frugal, by a significant margin with a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of just 3.9-litres per 100 km, with only 104 g/km of CO2 emitted.

To put this into perspective, the MINI Cooper D could comfortably travel from Sydney to Melbourne without refuelling its 40-litre tank which has a maximum range of 1,025 km from a fuel-tank.

The MINI Cooper D becomes the third turbocharged MINI engine, joining the petrol-fuelled MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works models, both of which feature twin scroll turbocharging, in the Australian line-up.

Pricing and fuel specifications to be released closer to its launch date.
