2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI Revealed

February 18th 2010 18:00
2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI

Volkswagen has unveiled their latest hot-hatch: the new 2011 Polo GTI.

Promising to be the fastest and cleanest performing Polo ever, the baby hot-hatch is powered by 1.4-litre TSI engine that uses a supercharger - from idle through to 3,000 rpm - and a turbocharger to provide boost at the upper end of the spectrum.

Developing 132 kW of power and 249 Nm of torque, the 1,184 kg Polo GTI sprints from rest to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 230 km/h.

The TSI engine is mated to a 7-speed, twin-clutch DSG gearbox that channels drive through the front wheels. In addition, the Polo GTI is fitted with the XDS differential, an electronic cross-axle traction control system for improved traction and handling. The XDS system is a functional extension of the electronic limited slip differential (EDL) which is a part of the standard ESP system.

In order to sharpen responses, the Polo GTI is fitted with new springs and dampers which results in a 15 mm lower ride height than the conventional Polo.

The Polo GTI features significant aesthetic changes over the standard Polo range and they include a new front bumper featuring a deep airdam is joined by a honeycomb grille element with horizontal red strips and a simple GTI badge. New headlight units complete with the option of LED running lights lend the Polo GTI an imposing new look.

The rear bumper features a small diffuser and a pair of chrome-tipped exhausts while a set of 17-inch wheels and red brake calipers rounds off the cosmetic upgrades.

The changes continue inside the Polo GTI with revised dials, a new, flat-bottomed GTI steering wheel complete with small gearshift paddles and contrasting red stitching, aluminium pedals and new, heavily bolstered front sports seats finished in tartan trim. Subtle gloss black trim covers the centre console while the headlining is now finished in black.

Australian deliveries are expected to begin in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

Volkswagen Golf GTI MkVI

The much anticipated Volkswagen Golf GTI MkVI has finally landed in Australia, seven months after its European launch, with full technical details and pricing also revealed at its local launch in Victoria on October 27th.

There's not much we don't know about the 6th iteration of the sporty hot-hatch: its turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine develops 155 kW and 280 Nm thus allowing it to cover the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 240 km/h.

A new Extended Electronic Differential Lock (XDL) improves traction and reduces the tendency to understeer while the optional Adaptive Chassis Control system, featuring electronically controlled damper units, is offered for the first time on the GTI. This allows the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to define the desired suspension, steering and accelerator response settings for any particular journey.

Exterior styling draws on the new design direction; simple, clean surfaces mix with sharp creases and large honeycomb grille elements. The use of horizontal lines around the front of the vehicle makes the new GTI appear lower and wider than it really is

Standard equipment highlights on the new GTI include red and black tartan sports seats with red stitching and headrests featuring the “GTI” logo, a flat-bottomed GTI multifunction steering wheel, red brake callipers, 17-inch “Denver” alloy wheels and dual zone automatic climate control

As with the rest of the Golf range, the new GTI features class-leading levels of safety with ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and seven airbags, including for the first time a knee airbag, all as standard.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Pirelli edition

The microsite may be asking us to 'register our interest' but as far as we're concerned, the launch of a Golf GTI Pirelli microsite isn't to gauge interest in such a model - it is all but a confirmation that this limited edition 'Rabbit' will be officially making its way down under as a run-out model before the launch of the Golf Mk VI
