Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG 10th Anniversary edition

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a special commemorative edition of the M-class SUV - the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG "10th Anniversary" jubilee model - to celebrate ten years of AMG high-performance SUVs.

Since the first AMG tweaked SUV, the ML 55 AMG, was released back in 1999, it offered a level of driving performance previously unthinkable in this segment. Such was the success of the ML 55 AMG (which sold over 11,000 units between 1999-2003) that it forced the likes of BMW and Porsche to return fire with the X5 and Cayenne respectively.

Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG 10th Anniversary edition

In its current guise, the ML 55 AMG (5.5-litre V8; 255 kW) has been superseded by the AMG-built ML 63 featuring a 6.2-litre, 375 kW V8 engine with enough power and performance to embarrass many self-proclaimed 'sports car' on the market.

he ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary” jubilee model was developed exclusively in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO and features a redesigned front-end including 'power domes' on the bonnet, a Himalaya grey painted front grille with matching underseal and fog lamp surrounds and a choice of three liveries: metallic obsidian black, metallic iridium silver and calcite white.

Rounding off the exterior aesthetics is set of exclusive 21-inch AMG light alloy wheels with a five-spoke design finished with a high-sheen surface.

The sporty yet plush cabin boasts electronically-adjustable AMG sports seats with multi-contour function and seat heating. A new feature is the exquisite two-tone nappa leather upholstery available in two different colour combinations: black/alpaca grey and black/beige. The AMG sports steering wheel with shift-paddles matches the two-tone nature of the seats with grippy perforated leather to ensure optimum handling. The exclusive tone is emphasised not just by the upper part of the dashboard clad in designo leather and the black roof lining, but also the charcoal poplar wood trim.

The Official Mercedes-Benz Press Release:

The successful ML 63 AMG will shortly be launched as the especially exclusive “10th Anniversary” variant. The 375-kW/510-hp top M-Class model fascinates with its striking appearance and extraordinary standard features. With the ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary”, Mercedes AMG is celebrating ten years of high-performance SUVs. The ML 55 AMG with a 255-kW/347-hp AMG 5.5-l V8 engine, launched in 1999, is considered the trendsetter and founder of an entire vehicle segment.

The ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary” jubilee model was developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO and showcases AMG’s expertise in catering to the wishes of individual customers. The experts at the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO were also responsible for developing the new SL 65 AMG Black Series, as well as Official F1™ Safety Car and Official F1™ Medical Car.

The newly designed front end dominates the extraordinary appearance of the ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary”: the bonnet with power domes catches the eye, as does the radiator grille with fins painted Himalaya grey. A matching Himalaya grey underseal and fog lamp fittings form a delightful contrast to the exterior paintwork in metallic obsidian black, metallic iridium silver and calcite white. Shaded Bi-Xenon headlights add the finishing touch to the front view.

Viewed from the side, the exclusive 21” AMG light alloy wheels with a five-spoke design commands attention: the combination of Himalaya grey paintwork and the high-sheen surface creates a lasting impression. The 10 x 21” AMG light alloy wheels are fitted all round with size 295/35 R 21 wide-base tyres. On the rear end of the ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary”, the underseal in Himalaya grey mirrors the design of the front end.

Exquisite two-tone nappa leather upholstery in the interior

The AMG sports seats can be adjusted electronically, and feature a multi-contour function and seat heating. A new feature is the exquisite two-tone nappa leather upholstery available in two different colour combinations: black/alpaca grey and black/beige. The AMG sports steering wheel is also two-tone, designed to match the interior colour scheme. Perforated leather covering the grip area ensures optimum handling, and the AMG switch paddles enable manual gear changing. The exclusive tone is emphasised not just by the upper part of the dashboard clad in designo leather and the black roof lining, but also the charcoal poplar wood trim.

The ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary” will be available to order in spring 2009; the first vehicles will be delivered to customers in summer 2009.

ML 55 AMG: Worldwide trendsetter and first ever high-performance SUV

With the new ML 63 AMG “10th Anniversary”, Mercedes AMG GmbH is celebrating ten years of AMG high-performance SUVs. The ML 55 AMG, the high-performing top model from the popular first generation of M-Class vehicles, was launched in September 1999 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt on Main. As the founder of the new “high-performance SUV” segment, the ML 55 AMG quickly became a best seller in the AMG range of models. With a maximum output of 255 kW/347 hp, an engine displacement of 5.5 litres and eight cylinders, the ML 55 AMGoffered a level of driving performance previously unthinkable in this segment: it could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, and had a top speed of 235 km/h. The extraordinary combination of its superior drive train, greater off-road suitability, outstanding driver comfort, unrivalled safety and generous interior delighted AMGcustomers all over the world. Over 11,000 ML 55 AMGs were sold between 1999 and 2003.

Stonking: Hamann SLR Volcano

November 3rd 2008 02:45
Hamann SLR Volcano

The lads over at aftermarket tuners Hamann have an insatiable appetite for kilowatts - not that there's a problem with that - and it seems not even a McLaren Mercedes-Benz SLR supercar with 467 kW can quench their thirst for insane power figures.

Hamann engineers have tweaked the 5.4-litre, supercharged V8 to deliver 515 kW and 830 Nm of torque courtesy of a newly programmed control unit, especially developed high performance exhaust manifolds and an amended belt pulley combination for the serial compressors. A second water pump and adjusted gearbox electronics also contributes to the increased performance. Needless to say, performance figures are absolutely 'volcanic' - try 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 348 km/h.

The Hamann SLR Volcano receives a makeover with a bodykit that is completely at home on a fully-bred race car featuring carbon fibre front- and rear wing extensions and also new side skirt attachments and sheathings. There's also a newly designed lightweight bonnet, an integrated bonnet scoop, a strong diffuser which improves the car´s output in combination with the large rear wing and a newly developed front spoiler at the front axle.

Sexy EDITION RACE 21-inch wheels shod in 255/30 (front) and 345/25 (rear) rubber rounds off the aggressive package. In addition to two colour choices - aluminum/chrome or white/matte - owners can specify from an extensive list of options including aluminum pedals, door sills and headrests emblazoned with Hamann logos, more carbon fibre and Alcantara trim for the dash, centre console, steering wheel and even the sun visors.

The Official Hamann Press Release:

HAMANN VOLCANO

The serial Mercedes-Benz SLR is already one of the most impressive cars on our roads – but compared to the HAMANN VOLCANO it still looks rather harmless. Once again, HAMANN-Motorsport proves its cutting edge when it comes to refining superb sports cars. From a lift-reducing body design to a powerful performance enhancement to a lavishly styled interior, HAMANN focuses on all components of this luxury car and makes the automobile dreams of its exclusive clientele come true.

The total makeover of the Laupheim-based refiner is made of extremely light full carbon and consists of front- and rear wing extensions and also new side skirt attachments and sheathings. The front view of the Volcano is optically perfected with a newly designed bonnet which enhances the overall impression by its integrated hood scoop. But also for the rear, the refining technicians implemented new ideas giving the SLR appearance its finishing touch. Under the boot lid cover, HAMANN placed a strong diffuser which improves the car´s output in combination with the large rear wing. At the front axle, a newly developed front spoiler renders the necessary contact pressure. If desired, an especially developed overall paint for the VOLCANO in either aluminium/chrome or white/matt completes the striking appearance of this bolide.

The 21-inch rims named EDITION RACE with tyres measuring 255/30ZR21 at the front and 345/25ZR21 at the back render an optimal road grip. The design of the extraordinary light forged wheel thereby combines vitality and elegance and also perfectly fills out the wheel houses.

The HAMANN makeover is not only sportive, but also has a lot to offer under the bonnet. The HAMANN motor technicians get the most out of the Mercedes Benz V8-aggregate (5.4 litres, 626 hp, 780 Nm): 700 hp / 515 kW and a maximum torque of 830 Nm at 3,300 crankshaft revolutions per minute. The therefore necessary modifications include a newly programmed control unit, especially developed high performance exhaust manifolds and an amended belt pulley combination for the serial compressors. In order to facilitate the increased motor performance, HAMANN adds a second water pump and adjusts the gearbox electronics. Invigorated in this way and with the adequate sound from the six end pipes of the sport exhaust system, the VULCANO accelerates from naught to a hundred in only 3.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 348 km/h, the HAMANN VOLCANO is 14 km/h faster than the serial model.

The HAMANN product even beats the factory-provided performance-enhanced special series SLR 722 by impressive 11 km/h.

A skillfully refined interior is waiting for the VOLCANO-pilot and also the exterior does not rank behind. The overall makeover contains pedals and foot rests in aluminium as well as noble door sill protectors and headrests with embossed embroidered HAMANN-Logos. They can also be found on the exclusive floor mats. The overall makeover can be enhanced with a HAMANN interior set containing custom-made carbon parts for the dashboard and centre console. If desired, also the roof interior, all pillars, the cockpit including the steering wheel and the sun visors can hereby be adjusted in terms of colour. Therefore, HAMANN solely uses the high-quality material Alcantara.
