Volkswagen Golf Mk VI

The new sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf has been awarded a maximum five-star rating by the Euro NCAP crash test agency. Scoring 36 out of a possible 37 points for occupant protection, the new generation Golf will be one of the safest vehicles on our roads when it arrives on Australian shores next year.

In Europe, the Mk VI Golf is fitted with a total of seven airbags including a knee airbag, electronic stabilisation program (ESP), brake assist, ABS and new whiplash reducing headrests as standard. Together with the improvements in side impact protection, a stronger chassis and a new sensor concept called "crash impact sound sensing" for crash detection, the new Golf remains at the forefront of occupant safety.

The Official Volkswagen Press Release:

The new Volkswagen Golf VI has been awarded a maximum five-star rating by the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) crash test agency.

The new Golf’s result matches the star rating achieved by the current Golf V. However, the new Golf has received 36 out of a possible 37 points for occupant protection leading to its five-star award. In the area of pedestrian safety, the new Golf scored an impressive 3 stars.

The new Golf will be among the safest vehicles currently on sale, thanks to the fitment of seven airbags, including a knee airbag, as standard across the range. This is in addition to standard Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), Brake Assist, ABS, the introduction of new whiplash reducing headrests, side impact protection and a stronger chassis structure than ever before. Furthermore, a new sensor concept for crash detection has been introduced with the Golf. The development of this so-called “crash impact sound sensing” system was awarded the innovation prize in Bavaria in May 2008.

Volkswagen has always been at the forefront of occupant safety. The Volkswagen 411, launched in 1968 featured front crumple zones and a passenger survival cell, a trait carried over to the Mk I Golf in 1974 while adding self-stabilising steering, rear crumple zones and fuel tank protection. In 1987 the Golf II was fitted with ABS for the first time and in 1991 the Golf III introduced a collapsible steering column, side impact protection and traction control. The 2004, the Golf V achieves a five-star Euro NCAP rating. A total of 34 years and 26 million sales after the introduction of the Mk I Golf, the Golf VI continues to set new standards.

Volkswagen Golf GTI MkVI

The new sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI has made its international debut at the Paris Motor Show. Powered by a revised version of the excellent 2.0-litre TFSI engine, power is now at 155 kW (up from 147 kW) while torque remains the same at 280 Nm (available from just 1,800 rpm).

While some may lament the minor power hike and same 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds (7.2 sec - manual transmission), the new sports suspension which lowers the car by 22 mm and a new electronic limited-slip diff (XDS) should mean that the new GTI is better equipped to tackle the twisties than the much lauded fifth-gen version.

"We wanted a purposefully clear GTI design. A car that has power but also style." - Volkswagen AG's chief designer Walter de'Silva.

And here's a video of the latest generation Golf GTI in action:

The Official Volkswagen Press Release:

Sharp and sovereign – The new Golf GTI
The bestseller with the best values: 240 km/h, 210 bhp, 7.5 litres
Wolfsburg, 25 September 2008 - Since the debut of the first and the discontinuation of the fifth generation, more than 1.7 million buyers made the GTI to the world's bestseller. Now the new GTI is at the ready: at the Paris Motor Show (4th to 19th October 2008) Volkswagen will be demonstrating the design study of the new Golf GTI at its world premiere.

The GTI suspension with a new electronic limited-slip diff (XDS) defines curves and traction in a completely new way. A GTI with a top speed of 240 km/h that with its 155 kW / 210 bhp strong turbocharged engine is even more fun and, on average, only uses 7.5 litres.

The sixth generation Golf GTI will go into series production in the spring of 2009 – as usual with a unique connection between sporty suspension and agile engine. The engine develops already at 1,800 rpm a maximum torque of 280 newton metres. The sprint from 0 to 60mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds. A stand-off between wind resistance and output occurs only just at 240 km/h.

Lowered by 22 millimetres and equipped with a new sports suspension, the springs, shock absorbers and rear anti-roll bars of the design study have been completely reworked. Furthermore, the optional adaptive chassis control DCC feature will also be available for the future GTI.

"We wanted a purposefully clear GTI design. A car that has power but also style," summarises the Volkswagen AG's chief designer Walter de'Silva. The design study of the sixth generation presented in Paris blends in both style elements of the GTI icons. Details like the typical honeycombed radiator grill and the V-shaped bonnet, stretching over the head lights, contribute to the GTI V. The clean and horizontal structure clearly originates from the GTI I. Because of the styling as well as the underlining horizontal graphic of the front section the Golf GTI design study appears visually wider (1.78 meter), lower (1.47 meter) and more dynamic than any other car in its class.
