Honda Civic Type R Mugen UK Spec

June 22nd 2009 17:30
Honda Civic Type R Mugen UK Spec

Ah, the current generation, UK spec and Australian-delivered Honda Civic Type R (FN2R). While we're lucky to actually have a Type R model amongst the Honda stable, the Honda enthusiasts will tell you that we actually missed out on the 'real' Civic Type R, the Japanese-spec FD2R sedan.

You see, while the Jap-spec Civic Type R boasted a 165 kW, 2.0-litre K20A, i-VTEC engine, the UK built FN2R model had only 148 kW from its K20Z4 engine. To add more insult to injury, this was only an extra 1 kW over its predecessor, the EP3 Civic Type R.

But that's all about to change with the imminent launch of a hardcore version of the UK-spec Honda Civic Type R by Mugen. Founded in Japan in 1973 as a Honda tuning arm by Soichiro Honda's son, Hirotoshi, the Honda Civic Type R Mugen UK Spec will be similar to the Civic Mugen RR and features a variety of go-fast bits including a vented bonnet, aero bumper, fenders and a ridiculous looking rear wing. Special Mugen alloy wheels are also fitted.

Performance has been boosted to 176 kW courtesy of a new sports exhaust system plus manifold, hi performance air cleaner and box, sports suspension, quick shifter, LSD and hi performance oil element/filter.

Aimed at Britain's track day enthusiasts, expect the Honda Civic Type R Mugen to have shed some pounds via a stripped-down interior for optimum handling and power-to-weight ratio.

Price is rumoured to be around £35,000 - £40,000.
