Fifth Gear Nissan GT-R

UK motoring show Fifth Gear has pipped rivals Top Gear by securing the first drive of the phenomenal Nissan GT-R (R35) in Britain.

Driven by race driver Jason Plato - we thought Tiff Needell would have bagged the keys to this one - the Godzilla is taken for a quick fang around a racetrack to display cornering speeds of up to 1Gs as shown on the built-in display by the makers of the GranTurismo video game.

Plato thinks the car is phenomenal but says the car's computer has given it two personalities. He says that it's brilliant in a slow-speed hairpin but lets itself down on the longer medium-speed to fast corners where it wants to understeer too much.

Nissan GT-R Pearl White
Pearl White is the most popular colour during pre-orders

Since Nissan started accepting pre-orders for the new GT-R less than two months ago, some 2,282 buyers have already signed on the dotted line for the Porsche 911 Turbo beating AWD coupe.

Nissan has revealed that 60% of the buyers are under 50 years-old with the most popular grade series being the Premium edition and the most popular colour being Pearl White (27% of all orders).

Kaji Yoshimitsu, Marketing Director for Skyline and GT-R, said: "It is encouraging to see that Japanese customers have been inspired by these new sports cars from Nissan."

And it's easy to see why.

Powered by a 3.8-litre Twin Turbo VR38 V6 engine developing 353kW and 588Nm, the new GT-R laps the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in 7m 38s, an amazing 2 seconds faster than the mighty Porsche 911(997) Turbo!

The GT-R will officially go on sale in Japan on December 6, 2007.
