AIMS: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX
November 14th 2007 06:30
The all-new 2008 Subaru Impreza range debuted at the Australian International Motor Show with the WRX 'cult car' at the centre of attention due to its latest incarnation as a hatch-back.
While the body shape has changed "to progress with the times", beneath the sheetmetal still lies the workings of a sports car. Featuring a slightly tweaked version of the 2.5-litre horizontally-opposed 4 cylinder engine from the previous generation WRX, the latest model gets 169kW of power at 5,200rpm and 320 Nm of torque at a very useful 2,800 rpm combined with standard VDC stability control and advanced ABS brakes with Brake Assist for power and control in all conditions.
Smoother power delivery through the rev range and a significantly increased body rigidity provide rewarding driving dynamics every time you take to the road.
Having seen it in the metal, people's opinions on the looks of the new WRX should change over time as they warm to the new design. It is much more pleasing on the eye than any pictures could ever show (it looks quite fantastic in obsidian black) and it is undoubtedly a lot more sophisticated than any of its predecessors - something that Subaru has strived to achieve with this new model.
And for that, they have succeeded.
The all-new Subaru WRX is on sale now with prices starting at $39,990.
