AIMS preview: Mazda Taiki Concept

September 12th 2008 04:45
Mazda Taiki Concept

The stunning Mazda Taiki Concept that made its international debut at last year's Tokyo Motor Show has been earmarked to grace the Mazda stand at this year's Australian International Motor Show.

Taiki is the fourth concept car in Mazda's acclaimed series of "flow" - Nagare in Japanese - design studies unveiled in recent years and is an exercise in advanced aerodynamics that hints at a future generation of more sustainable sports cars. It is designed, according to Mazda, to “visually express the flow of air” and takes inspiration from the shape of the traditional flowing robes that enable a celestial maiden to fly in Japanese legend.

Featuring dramatic styling cues including a rear bodywork and outrigger-style rear wheels, the car’s aerodynamic drag co-efficient is reduced to a slippery 0.25, thereby improving fuel economy. In addition, a kick-up of the car’s underside at the rear results in zero aerodynamic lift, improving high-speed stability.

Powered by a next-generation RENESIS (rotary engine 16X, refer to book separate volume for details), which sets new standards for environmental and driving performance, the Taiki boasts a front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout, unique 2-seat configuration, and others which convey an image of lightness. A new direct injection system and aluminium side housing enhance the rotary engine’s traditional merits of light weight and compact size.

Mazda’s designers say the Taiki’s interior is inspired by traditional Japanese carp-shaped streamers and, like the exterior, is designed to convey the sense of air flow.

Among its innovative features are the ultra-fine rows of LEDs on the edges of the blades that comprise the grill. The rear combination lamps and door-mounted turn signal lamps employ unique Mazda technology and appear to shine through the body color but are distinguishable only when lit. The effect throughout creates the illusion of flowing air being transformed into lights visible to the human eye.

The Australian International Motor Show beings on October 9, 2008.

Mazda Kiyora Urban Concept

Another motor show; another concept car from Mazda.

Japanese car maker Mazda will unveil yet another concept at the prestigious Paris Motor Show on October 4 to 19. Dubbed the Kiyora - Japanese for "clean and pure" - the urban concept car bears all the hallmarks of Mazda's "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" vision - lightweight, driver-focussed, environmentally friendly and safe.

Targetted at the younger demographic, the Kiyora concept features a four-cylinder direct-injection engine with great fuel economy and low CO2 emissions plus an interior design and new functions that are geared towards a youthful lifestyle.

The Mazda Kiyora will be joined in Paris by the facelifted 2009 Mazda MX-5 convertible, a Mazda6 equipped with Mazda's newly developed MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, and the Mazda2 powered by a MZ-CD 1.6-liter diesel.

The Official Mazda Press Release:

Mazda Kiyora Urban Concept To Debut At 2008 Paris Show

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Mazda Kiyora, a lightweight, next generation, urban compact concept car, will be revealed at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show to be held from Thursday, October 2 through Sunday, October 19, 2008.

Mazda Kiyora (meaning "clean and pure" in Japanese) represents the harmony between driving pleasure and environmental and safety features aspired to in Mazda's long-term technology development vision, "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom."

The concept of Kiyora helped the designers to imagine a city car cutting cleanly through an urban landscape, with water as the design theme. Kiyora's aerodynamic Nagare design and next-generation four-cylinder direct-injection engine contribute to excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.

The new Mazda Kiyora concept car is based on an all-new platform designed to minimise weight and maximise safety and driving pleasure. It also features an interior design and new functions that support a youthful lifestyle.

Joining the Mazda Kiyora concept car on Mazda's stand at the Paris show, the Mazda MX-5 facelift will make its world debut together with the Mazda6 equipped with Mazda's newly developed MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, and the Mazda2 powered by a MZ-CD 1.6-liter diesel.
