2009 Honda Jazz

The second-generation Honda Jazz has finally been launched in Australia with prices starting at $15,990 for the entry-level Jazz GLi model and topping out at $23,920 for the flagship 1.5-litre VTi-S with automatic transmission. This represents a price increase of $1,000 for the VTi and VTi-S models only - the GLi remains unchanged.

While the new model is slightly less economical than the previous generation, a vehicle that consumes between 5.8L/100km to 6.7L/100km of fuel can hardly be deemed thirsty but what might count against this baby Honda - aside from its price premium over the Toyota Yaris and Mazda2 - is the omission of Electronic Stability Control for the local line-up.

The fitment of this potential life saving technology is necessary to achieve a five-star NCAP safety rating but while Honda Australia has been quick to point out that the omission of ESC has been enforced by the engine configuration of Aussie-delivered models, that argument sounds strange as all RHD models for local and overseas markets share identical engine configurations.

One of the biggest changes to the new generation Jazz is the change from CVT (continuously variable transmission) to the normal automatic transmission, which according to Chief designer Toshiyuki Harada, gives a better balance between fuel economy and driving enjoyment.

The 2009 Honda Jazz is on sale now.

Preview: 2010 Honda Civic hatchback

2010 Honda Civic hatchback

Ladies and Gentlemen: This is what the all-new UK-built 2010 Honda Civic hatchback is apparently going to look like. According to AutoExpress, these exclusive shots show how the popular hatch will look when the next generation Civic hits showrooms in 2010.

Looking less like a space-ship than the current model, the futuristic looking hatch draws many of its design cues from the recent Honda OSM (‘Open Study Model’) concept car which made an appearance at the British Motor Show.

The shape of the 'new' Civic is identical to the OSM including the single strip light cluster at the rear and even the projector style wheels with the only noticeable difference being a hard-top roof that extends to the rear hatchback style, two extra air intakes in the front bumper and a fuel cap on the left-hand side of the vehicle.

The new Civic will compete with the VW Scirocco in the hatchback ‘coupé’ segment aimed at younger buyers. A series of new generation engines will also feature in the 2010 Civic line-up including a 1.5-litre IMA hybrid engine developing more than 110 kW (150 bhp) and sub-CO2 120g/km emissions will appear.

The best piece of news for hot-hatch lovers is that the 2010 Civic Type R is rumoured to be powered by a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine which could be boosted by an electric motor thus making it a sports-hybrid.
