Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Sportback

Mitsubishi will take the fight to Subaru's WRX with the local launch of the all-wheel drive turbocharged Lancer Ralliart in both sedan and Sportback (hatchback) body styles.

Bridging the gap between the Lancer VR-X and the top-of-the-range Lancer Evolution, the Lancer Ralliart features a detuned version of the Evolution’s 2.0-litre turbocharged and intercooled MIVEC engine that develops 177 kW and 343 Nm.

Priced from $42,490, the Lancer Ralliart may be $2,500 dearer than the WRX, but it features the DC-SST transmission from the Evolution model, with ultra fast paddle shift and a choice of manual or auto modes as standard.

With the launch of the Lancer Ralliart coinciding with the local launch of the Subaru WRX sedan for the 2009 model year, competition between these two Japanese marques have never been more fierce.

Mazda3 facelift

The aging Mazda 3 has received an upgrade to give buyers additional features, improved safety and value for the popular small car.

The entry-level Neo and mid-range Maxx have been renamed as Neo Sport and Maxx Sport respectively while the SP23 and MPS models remain unchanged. The entry-level Neo Sport now comes with 15-inch alloys, electric windows and mirrors, new seat and door fabric in black and an MP3 auxiliary jack for the audio system as standard.

The good news is that price remains unchanged at a competitive $20,990 for the manual version. The Safety Pack option (curtain air-bags etc.) is priced $1700 and the automatic transmission is a $2000 option.

The Maxx Sport ($25,500) and Diesel models gets newly-designed 16-inch alloy wheels, revised cloth interior trim, chrome external door handles and a centre console finished in Piano Black gloss while the SP23 is now fitted with DSC (dynamic stability control) and traction control as standard. The SP23 ($29,600) also gains seat and door trim from the top of the range MPS in lieu of the previous Luxury Pack option.

The hot-hatch MPS version ($38,750) gets the least amount of upgrades with just a new cloth trim featuring red highlights.

Four new colours - Copper Red, Golden Sand, Metropolitan Grey and Stormy Blue - takes the total number of colour selections to 12.
