TAS 2009: Mugen NSX RR

January 14th 2009 22:30
Mugen NSX RR

Tough economic times has forced Honda to cancel development of the next-generation NSX but thankfully that hasn't stopped in-house tuning arm Mugen from working their magic on the everyday supercar.

Mugen NSX RR

Unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Mugen NSX RR is a wild concept version of the legendary NSX which ended production in 2005. Featuring a combination of lightweight carbon fibre and aluminium body panels for its wide bodykit which has elongated and widened the car to 177.95 and 5.5 inches respectively, the famous 3.0-litre V6 engine has also been replaced with a rather tasty supercharged 2.4-litre V6.

Mated to a revised six-speed manual gearbox, Mugen has been mum about the official power output but rumour has it that the NSX RR is pushing some 284 kW. Sadly, the Mugen NSX RR is just officially an one-off show car, but who knows, maybe Honda.Mugen will consider acquiring some low mileage NSXs and converting them to 'RR' spec, just like what Nissan did with the NISMO R34 GT-R Z-Tune.

Here's hoping...

2010 Honda NSX

Barely a week after announcing it was withdrawing from the 2009 Formula One World Championship, Honda has made a second shock announcement with plans for the much anticipated second generation NSX supercar scrapped for the time being.

2010 Honda NSX

Blaming the global financial tsunami as the reason behind their unfortunate decision, Honda claims plans for the 418 kW V10 NSX, which was due to go on sale sometime in 2010, hasn't been completely canned and development will resume once the car maker's financial situation improves.

The NSX successor was widely tipped to follow the Nissan GT-R in challenging the traditional European marques in the performance stakes with a F1-inspired V10 engine developing as much as 418 kW.

2010 Honda NSX underpinnings

Rumour has it that the replacement for the Honda NSX won't arrive until sometime in late 2009 or early 2010 but when it does, expect it to come with a stonking F1-inspired 5.5-litre V10 engine developing some 418 kW according to the latest scoop from Auto Express
