2009 Honda Life

The Honda Life is a K-car available in Japan only and was first introduced onto the market in 1971. Through four generations spanning over 20 years, the Life remains as popular as ever in a country filled with K-cars - a popular choice of vehicle due to its tax and insurance relaxations.

An all-new fifth generation of the Honda Life will officially go on sale in its homeland today (November 7, 2008). According to Honda, the new generation Life will be the first minicar in Japan to include an audio system with a backup camera as standard equipment.

Available in three trim levels, the Life 'G-type', Diva and Pastel are targeted at different demographics ranging from those looking for something simple, modern and practical to perky and sporty to refined, elegant and fashionable.

Two engine selections are available: the light and compact 660 cc inline 3-cylinder i-DSI engine and the i-DSI turbo engine.

The Official Honda Press Release:

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that sales in Japan of the all-new Life will begin on November 7, 2008. Continuing a tradition of superior comfort and utility, the new Life offers enhanced drivability and is the first minicar in Japan to include an audio system with a backup camera as standard equipment.[1] In addition, a special mobility-assistive version of Life with lift-up frontpassenger seat will go on sale December 5.

The all-new Life was developed with the concept of "daily smile technology" to achieve a level of drivability and utility customers can enjoy in their everyday lives. Based on this concept, Honda evaluated every aspect of the vehicle from the customer's point of view to develop a minicar that will put a smile on the customer's face every day.

Customers may select from three Life variations to express their individuality and lifestyle: the Life G-type is simple, modern and practical, the Life Diva is perky and sporty, and the Life Pastel* is refined, elegant and fashionable. With an emphasis on advanced safety technologies, the Life is also the world's first automobile equipped with a driver-side i-SRS airbag system with continuously staged inflation, which accommodates a broad range of occupant positions and potential collision situations.

Drivability

- Large windows and slim pillars allow for excellent 360 degree visibility.
- The first minicar in Japan to include an audio system with a backup camera.[1]
Advanced Honda Smart Parking Assist System provides automatic steering assistance for moving forward and backward during parking.[2]

Comfort and utility
- Spacious cabin comfortably accommodates four adults.
- Manual driver's seat height adjuster helps to achieve an ideal driving position, enhancing visibility while making entry and exit easier.

Interior with enhanced functionality and comfort

- Larger, thicker, softer and more comfortable rear seats.
- Storage compartments throughout the vehicle for superior convenience.
- Center pillar grip for easy entry and exit, even for children and seniors.

Since first introduced in 1971, the Life has evolved with the times, always offering exceptional value while focusing on the people and lifestyles of each era. Today, Life is currently being enjoyed by more than 1.5 million customers in Japan, the largest number among Honda automobiles sold in the country.[3]

* "Pastel" was named after the pastels used by artists, the Life Pastel is for drivers looking to express their own colorful, interesting lifestyles.

2009 Honda Jazz

The second-generation Honda Jazz has finally been launched in Australia with prices starting at $15,990 for the entry-level Jazz GLi model and topping out at $23,920 for the flagship 1.5-litre VTi-S with automatic transmission. This represents a price increase of $1,000 for the VTi and VTi-S models only - the GLi remains unchanged.

While the new model is slightly less economical than the previous generation, a vehicle that consumes between 5.8L/100km to 6.7L/100km of fuel can hardly be deemed thirsty but what might count against this baby Honda - aside from its price premium over the Toyota Yaris and Mazda2 - is the omission of Electronic Stability Control for the local line-up.

The fitment of this potential life saving technology is necessary to achieve a five-star NCAP safety rating but while Honda Australia has been quick to point out that the omission of ESC has been enforced by the engine configuration of Aussie-delivered models, that argument sounds strange as all RHD models for local and overseas markets share identical engine configurations.

One of the biggest changes to the new generation Jazz is the change from CVT (continuously variable transmission) to the normal automatic transmission, which according to Chief designer Toshiyuki Harada, gives a better balance between fuel economy and driving enjoyment.

The 2009 Honda Jazz is on sale now.
