2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Australia's first locally built hybrid vehicle, Toyota's new Hybrid Camry, will go on sale in February, with distinctive hybrid features and values that will be instantly recognisable by customers and other motorists.

Unique exterior features for Hybrid Camry signify its importance as a model equipped with a hybrid system that features the latest technology.

At the front, Toyota stylists have pursued a design that projects Hybrid Camry's superior aerodynamic performance and innovation.

These elements are conveyed by the exclusively developed front mask, which includes blue-tinted headlamp extensions - a signature feature for Toyota hybrid vehicles.

The unique front bumper shares styling cues with new-generation Prius, providing aerodynamic and cosmetic benefits.

The sharp outer edges of the bumper flow into the sides of the vehicle with almost-flat side faces that aid air flow.

Hybrid Camry's radiator grille further differentiates the hybrid model with its unique design and satin-chrome finish, which is also used for the boot-lid garnish.

The lower grille is slightly larger and more rectangular, directing additional cooling air into an engine bay that accommodates vital hybrid components.

Hybrid badges are displayed prominently on the front guard and on the boot-lid.

Rear combination lamps have a clear cover and include LED lights that use less power and therefore contribute to lower fuel use.

Covers under the engine, rear floor and fuel tank improve airflow and contribute to an overall drag coefficient of 0.27 - among the best in mass-produced family cars.

Corporate manager of design at Toyota Style Australia Paul Beranger said: "Hybrid Camry styling cues project a strong impression of a hybrid vehicle that is far more than symbolic.

"Key aspects of its unique styling are designed to help preserve the global environment by reducing drag and therefore improving fuel consumption.

"The development of this new model is a crucial step towards gaining wide acceptance of Toyota hybrid vehicles in the market.

"The final design meets Toyota objectives by fusing the premium image of the conventional Camry with the innovation of a hybrid vehicle."

Hybrid Camry goes on sale in February 2010.

Besides the addition of these much welcome safety features, improved audio systems with MP3/WMA compatibility, a 3.5mm audio input jack and a USB jack with iPod control was also recently added to the Yaris three-door and five-door hatches and four-door sedans.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said these two linked systems of vehicle stability and traction control had been specifically engineered for the 1.5-litre engine in the Australian market.

"Toyota is committed to adding safety features to its vehicles as and when they become available for our market," Mr Buttner said.

"The addition of vehicle stability and traction control to the Yaris models fitted with the 1.5-litre engine can potentially reduce the number and severity of impacts.

"We will continue to add a variety of safety features to models across our range as the opportunity arises."

Toyota now offers the popular Yaris sub-compact in 32 variants with the choice of three body styles, two engines, two transmissions and three equipment grade levels (YR, YRS and YRX).
