It's almost that time of the year for annual automotive awards and one of the UK's most respected motoring journals, Autocar, has got the ball rolling for 2008 by naming Hyundai-Kia as its 'Car Company of the Year' at its annual award ceremony in London.

Autocar editor Chas Hallet praised the Korean giant's "mind-blowing" ambition. "When the irrepressible Hyundai-Kia group started talking, just a few years ago, about wanting to become the world's fifth largest car company behind Toyota, GM, Ford and Audi-VW, many of us were sceptical." he said.

"Then the Korean group got serious. They hatched a plan to assemble a European design and engineering team to conceive a range of models for Europe. Boldly, they challenged the VW Golf and Ford Focus head on, building cars that looked as good and worked as well - and offering them with a far longer warranty, just for good measure. They began to acquire a reputation as the Eastern marques that would bring forth bold design concepts, much as Citroen has been doing in Europe, and they built separate factories for Hyundai and Kia in lower-cost Eastern Europe, servicing both operations from handily placed engine and gearbox plants," he added.

The product of a Hyundai takeover in 1998, Hyundai-Kia currently dominates the Korean domestic car market with an 80 per cent share and this year became the world's fifth largest car-maker according to Automotive News in the US.

With plants in North America, China, Europe and other locations including Russia, the Middle East and South East Asia Hyundai-Kia has climbed into the top ranks of the world's biggest car companies in less than 50 years. Both companies began making automobiles in the 1960s and didn't start exporting their products until the 1980s.

Hyundai unaffected by financial crisis

In spite of the worldwide economic downturn which has claimed its fair share of casualties in the automotive world, Ford and GM in particular, Korean car maker Hyundai appears to be largely unaffected by the financial turmoil by posting its best ever October sales on record.

With its brilliant range of fuel-efficient models - i20, i30 etc. - in high demand, global sales has risen 12% to 269,958 units when official October 2007 and 2008 figures are compared back-to-back.

Not only has the Korean manufacturer experienced considerable growth in North American and Western Europe markets with exports of the small to medium sized i10, Accent, and Elantra models increasing significantly, emerging giants such as India and China have also contributed significantly to Hyundai's stellar results for October 2008.

The Official Hyundai Press Release:

Hyundai Motor Company posts best ever October sales - exports continue to rise

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea's largest automaker, posted its biggest global monthly sales ever in October, helped by higher demand for its fuel-efficient models.

Comparing October 2008 to October 2007, global sales rose 12% to 269,958 units, including overseas sales of 217, 223 units, highlighting Hyundai Motor Company's continued dedication to overseas sales and manufacturing. Accumulated sales for the first ten months of the year were up 8.9% from a year earlier to 2,330,617 units.

The overseas sales figure included a 10% increase in exports and a 27% increase in vehicles produced at the company's overseas plants. The figures for the two were 118,890 units and 98,333 units respectively. Overall, overseas sales rose 17% from a year earlier. Exports rose for all models in October as the company diverted more shipments overseas, due to tight supplies resulting from the mid year industrial action.

In advanced markets such as the United States, Western Europe and other developed nations, exports of the small to medium sized i10, Accent, and Elantra models increased significantly. Emerging markets such as the Middle East, Central America, Russia, and Africa experienced a broad increase in demand of models ranging from the small sized Getz to the Tucson compact SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle).

Regarding the emerging markets of India and China, the news was even more impressive: The i10 saw a huge sales increase of 66% in the Indian domestic market, whereas in China sales of the Elantra (Yuedong) increased by 21%.

These figures emphasise Hyundai Motor Company's sustained commitment to developing and exporting fuel-efficient small to medium sized cars around the globe, an approach which has been endorsed by consumers.
