The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG has been chosen as the new official safety car of the 2008 Formula One Championship which starts in Melbourne this month.
In a double-scoop for the German car maker, the C 63 AMG Estate (station wagon), was picked to be this year’s official Medical Car. Together with the SL 63 AMG, these two vehicles will be used for the entire 18 races in 2008.
The SL63 AMG will take to the F1 circuits equipped with a 386 kW, 6.2-liter V8 and a raft of under-body changes from the road-going version of the classy convertible. These modifications include drastic weight reductions with carbon fibre reinforced plastic and a fixed lightweight roof while performance has also been tweaked with an uprated cooling system, new heavy-duty composite brakes and redesigned rear diffuser for better rear-axle cooling.
The C63 AMG medical car gets a modified interior, larger exhaust pipes, and a redesigned front end without fog-lights.
