Opel Insignia Sports Tourer

Opel has announced the Insignia Sports Tourer will premiere at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in October. The station wagon variant of the highly anticipated Insignia sedan and hatchback features unique sheetmetal from the B-pillars and back.

While the Insignia station wagon retains an identical wheelbase of 2.74 metres with the sedan models, the luggage compartment now offers a sizable volume of 540 litres courtesy of an increase in the overall length (80 mm) of the vehicle to 4.91 metres.

The Sports Tourer will go on sale in European markets in 2009 with a choice of seven different powerplants - alongside the existing line-up of three petrol and two diesel units, a new turbo and turbo diesel will make its debut in this variant.

Available with all-wheel or front-wheel drive and a choice of manual or automatic six-speed transmissions, the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer will be appealing to customers for both its design and variety.

With sales figures of the Korean-sourced Holden Epica failing to keep up with the likes of Honda's Accord Euro, Mazda6 and Toyota Camry, Holden badly needs a suitable competitor in the hotly contested medium-car segment.

The recent launch of the stylish Opel Insignia - a replacement for the Vectra in Europe - could be just the answer for Holden as they try and make up some lost ground in the local market.

Opel has just released an official promotional video for the new Insignia and we feel that it is clearly a more desirable car than the Epica. Check out the video below.

Soft-top convertibles are great for open top driving but pose enough concerns at other times for manufacturers to opt for a hard-top, a trend created by the first generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-class and copied by everything from a Daihatsu (Copen) to a BMW (3-series
