Volvo XC60 wins UK automotive award

January 29th 2009 02:30
Volvo XC60

The all-new Volvo XC60 SUV has been awarded the What Car? SUV of the Year at the UK magazine's 2009 Awards.

Following in the footsteps of Volvo's seven-seat XC90, which was awarded the same title at the magazine's awards in 2003 and 2004, the Volvo XC60 is the safest and arguably one of the most stylish Volvo yet. It combines the SUV-like durability and practicality with a coupé profile and sporting driving dynamics. It also offers capacious levels of carrying space and its roomy cabin is designed to offer the highest level of comfort for five adults. Practicality is further boosted by Volvo's innovative 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats. When folded, the seats create a perfectly flat load space thanks to simple-to-use one-touch levers.

"Volvo is renowned for two things - making some of the world's most family-friendly cars, and some of the safest. The XC60 reinforces that reputation," praised Steve Fowler, What Car? (UK) Magazine group editor.

The Volvo XC60 will be launched in Australia in March 2009 priced from $57,950.

The all-new Volvo XC60 SUV will be priced from $57,950 when it goes on sale in Australia in March and will be available in petrol and turbodiesel forms - a competitive price in the hotly contested premium SUV segment for the boldest crossover vehicle yet produced by Volvo.

The technology-packed XC60 is also the safest Volvo ever with its City Safety system designed to bring dramatic reductions in the incidence and severity of urban collisions at speeds up to 30km/h while also capable of detecting the possibility of rear-end collisions at urban speeds (15 km/h).

Customers will have the choice of two engines paired with Volvo's six-speed Geartronic adaptive automatic for the Volvo XC60 - a five-cylinder turbodiesel D5 version producing 136 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque, and a new 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol six-cylinder XC60 T6 developing 210 kW. The XC60 T6 can accelerate from naught to 100km/h in a zippy 7.5 seconds.

Volvo Car Australia's Managing Director, Alan Desselss said: "The new XC60 will further raise the levels of dynamism within the Volvo lineup, as well as introducing what is perhaps the greatest step forward yet in terms of active safety with the new City Safety system,"

"In addition, it will be priced to issue a real challenge in the prestige SUV segment,"
he added.

VOLVO XC60 - RECOMMENDED RETAIL PRICING
XC60 D5 2.4 $57,950
XC60 D5 LE 2.4 $64,450

2009 Volvo XC60

Bloody Volvo drivers, I hear you say but in the event of an accident, there are a lot worse places to be than on the inside of one of the Swedish manufacturer's cars. Over the years, Volvo has established a strong reputation for vehicular safety and the XC60 SUV is no exception having just been awarded the highest rating for whiplash protection in EuroNCAP's first ever assessment of the protection offered by passenger cars in the event of rear-end collisions

To be blunt, Volvo's aren't known for building sporty and dynamic vehicles - in other words, they're rather dull. Understandably, the Swedish car maker misses out on a sizable demographic due to its safe but dull image so what do you do

With the new Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold set to take effect from July 1, 2008, many manufacturers are working out ways to entice customers to wrap-up their purchases (of $57,000 and above) early enough to take delivery of their new vehicles before the deadline
