BMW has cleaned up the field in Wheels magazine’s annual Gold Star Cars awards 2008 - a new comprehensive and realistic new car rating system conceived in Australia.

The annual Gold Star awards looks at cars costing up to $150,000 and focuses on a pragmatic set of values that relate directly to potential new car buyers faced with the dilemma of deciding which cars are going to deliver the best financial outcome at purchase time and during ownership. These aspects include purchase price, retained value, insurance costs, fuel costs, warranty details, servicing costs, safety and, finally, the driving experience.

BMW 135i Coupe: Best Sports Coupe Under $150,000

For the 2008 Gold Star awards, Wheels judged 98 sub-$150,000 cars in 18 categories, which covered the bulk of the Australian new-car market and BMW came out on top in a number of key categories.

The new 1 Series 125i Convertible and 135i Coupé performed remarkably well with the 125i Convertible judged to be the best Convertible under $100,000, with a score of 91.99 points (out of 100) awarded for aspects such as its unlimited-kilometre, three years warranty, low servicing costs and inbuilt BMW values such as safety and the quality of the driving experience.

The twin-turbo 135i Coupé was recognised as the best Sports Coupe under $150,000, earning points with its highly competitive purchase price and insurance costs, low servicing costs and exceptional driving experience.

(L-R) Audi A3 cabriolet and BMW 1-series cabriolet
Audi A3 cabriolet vs BMW 1-series cabriolet

UK motoring magazine Autocar has released a video of a short comparison test between two of the newest entrants in the world of premium compact convertibles - the Audi A3 cabriolet and BMW 1-series convertible.

The all-new Audi A3 cabriolet went on sale in Europe earlier this year and is based on the A3 hatchback and features a lightweight fabric roof that can be opened hydraulically in just nine seconds. The design and shape of the car is very 'coupe-like' as opposed to the hatch which it is based on. (see more here).

The BMW 1-series has been on the market for a few years now and it was only late last year that the German car maker released a cabriolet version of the car after a hard-top coupe version was unveiled. (See more here).

In this video, the A3 cabriolet fitted with a 147 kW (200 hp) 2.0-litre TFSI unit goes up against the BMW 125i, which packs a 160 kW (218 hp) 3.0-litre straight six. Watch the video to see who comes out on top!
