Porsche Panamera

German car maker Porsche's all-new Panamera four-door coupe will make its international debut at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show in China in April 2009.

The world's most populous country is becoming increasingly important to worldwide automotive manufacturers as evident by Porsche's decision to debut their first ever four-door sports car in this emerging market.

Porsche Panamera

The Porsche Panamera will feature a range of modern V-engines with either six or eight cylinders covering a power range from 224 - 373 kW and featuring Direct Fuel Injection. For the first time since the Porsche 928 model, the Panamera will have its engine mounted at the front of the vehicle - the 911 and Boxster/Cayman is rear- and mid-engined respectively (the Cayenne is not a 'sports' car despite its performance credentials).

The Panamera is making its debut with a normally aspirated V8 unit and a V8 featuring bi-turbocharger technology. Australian deliveries are expected in mid-2009.

The Official Porsche Press Release:

New Panamera: World Debut in China

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, will be presenting the new Panamera to the public for the first time at Auto Shanghai 2009 in China from 20 – 28 April. Porsche's unique, four-door Gran Turismo will be making its world debut at a press conference on 19 April and will be entering the market in late summer 2009.

The four-door Panamera combines a wide range of features seemingly contradictory at first sight, and offering a unique synthesis quite unparalleled in the premium segment: The Panamera comes with all the sporting and dynamic characteristics of a genuine Porsche combined with a very high standard of motoring comfort. Despite its extra-low and sleek coupé silhouette, in turn, the Panamera offers more than ample space and roominess inside for four passengers and variable loading space for a substantial amount of luggage. And last but not least, the Panamera proudly boasts power units offering a high standard of fuel efficiency despite the car's outstanding performance.

All power units featured in the Panamera are modern V-engines with either six or eight cylinders covering a power range from 300 – 500 bhp and featuring Direct Fuel Injection. This makes all engines quite superior in their power and torque, together with superior fuel economy and exhaust emissions reduced to a minimum.

The Panamera is making its debut with a V8 normal-aspiration power unit and a V8 featuring bi-turbocharger technology.

Depending on the model, power is transmitted by a six-speed manual gearbox or Porsche's new seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) (Double-Clutch Gearbox) available as an option on all models within the range not fitted with PDK as standard from the start. This gives the Panamera both a particularly sporting and an extra-comfortable character on the road.

As an option the Panamera Gran Turismo will be available with Porsche's Sports Chrono Package giving the car even more sporting and dynamic engine and gearshift characteristics and enhancing the dynamic performance of the Panamera to an even higher level of perfection.

The V6 and V8 normal-aspiration versions of the Panamera come as standard with rear-wheel drive. The top model in the range with its turbocharged power unit, in turn, features PTM (Porsche Traction Management) with extra-light, active all-wheel drive. PTM is also available on the other models.

In addition to the regular steel suspension featuring variable dampers for a sporting but comfortable driving experience, the Panamera is also available as an option with brand-new, adaptive air suspension offering additional air volume. This ensures a particularly wide range of suspension characteristics with an even higher standard of motoring comfort on the one hand and extremely sporting driving dynamics on the other.

In the Sport Plus Mode the air suspension lowers the entire car even further down to the road, giving the Panamera an even higher standard of aerodynamic efficiency and improving its centre of gravity, enhancing driving safety and reducing fuel consumption. As an option the Panamera is furthermore available with PDCC Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control actively compensating body roll in bends and at the same time improving the car's response and smoothness on bumpy roads when driving in a straight line.
Intelligent lightweight technology making appropriate use of high-strength steel, light alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, as well as high-tech plastic materials serves to reduce the weight of the car to an appropriately low level in its class, benefiting not only fuel economy, but also driving dynamics.

Porsche Panamera

The Porsche Panamera four-door coupe has been officially unveiled in all its glory ahead of its mid-year launch in 2009. The somewhat oddly shaped grand touring sports car is Porsche's first ever four-seater sports car and will become the German car maker's fourth model series with its unique blend of sporty driving dynamics and Gran Turismo comfort.

Porsche Panamera

Measuring 1931 millimetres or 76.0 inches in width, 1418 millimetres or 55.8 inches in height and 4970 millimetres or 195.7 inches in length, the Panamera is unlike anything we've ever seen from Porsche yet its unmistakable, sleek GT silhouette with short, sporting overhangs front and rear follows the same design philosophy as the famous 911.

Porsche Panamera

In terms of styling, we think it looks great bar the rear quarter and back which can appear rather bulbous and will no doubt require the most time getting used to but other than that, the Panamera has Porsche DNA written all over it.

Powered by a range of V-engines with six/eight cylinders and turbocharger and Direct Fuel Injection technologies, power ranges from a 'modest' 221 kW to a fire-breathing 368 kW - sent to the rear-, or all four-wheels, via a manual six-speed gearbox or the new seven-speed double-clutch PDK gearbox.

Porsche promises to release further details on the engines, transmissions, performance, prices and equipment closer to its Northern summer launch.

The Official Porsche Press Release:

Market Launch in Summer 2009

Porsche Presents First Photos of Four-Door Panamera Gran Turismo

Stuttgart. Roughly nine months before the actual market launch, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has released the first official photos of the Panamera in its final look. In its design, profile and silhouette, Porsche's unique four-seater stands out clearly as a new member of the Porsche family. Conceived and designed as a four-door grand touring sports car, the Panamera combines numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a generous and variable interior, and the supreme driving comfort of a Gran Turismo. Joining the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the sporty SUV Cayenne, the Panamera is Porsche's fourth model series.

The designers of the Panamera have succeeded in positioning this unique car as a brand-new and truly different model while nevertheless retaining the looks of a typical Porsche. Through its proportions alone, the Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment: measuring 1931 millimetres or 76.0 inches in width, the Panamera is wider, and measuring 1418 millimetres or 55.8 inches in height, lower than comparable four-door models. The unmistakable, sleek GT silhouette is created by the car's overall length of 4970 millimetres or 195.7 inches and short, sporting overhangs front and rear. In its styling and details, the Panamera follows the design philosophy refined over decades on the 911 and successfully implemented also on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne.

Through its design language alone, the Panamera will establish a new segment versus the competition. The symbiosis of sports car DNA derived from the looks of a coupé, the unique interpretation of the classical saloon body and the benefits of a variable space concept give the new Porsche its truly unmistakable appearance. As an example, the Panamera comes with highly individual, strongly contoured air intakes instead of a conventional radiator grille. Striking wheel arches and the long and sleek engine compartment lid create that typical 911 "landscape" at the front end of the car the Porsche customer has appreciated for no less than 45 years, with the distinctly contoured wings as flanks bordering on the flat front lid. The V-shaped seams along the engine compartment lid and the rear window tapering out like an arrow to the rear convey the features characteristic of a sports car to the new, highly individual Panamera class. The striking, muscular shoulders over the rear wheels, the dynamic sweep of the coupé-like roofline, and the visible tailpipes again bear out all the DNA so typical of a thoroughbred Porsche.

The elegant roof arch extends stylishly over the generous interior, simply begging the beholder to get inside. Like all Porsche models, the Panamera is oriented in every respect to the needs and wishes of the driver. But now, thanks to the new concept of space and the sporting architecture of the interior, the car's occupants are also able to experience this special "pilot feeling" on all four seats. All four occupants enjoy supreme ergonomic comfort on both the front seats and the two firmly contoured single seats at the rear. The luggage compartment easily takes up all the passengers' luggage. The variable space concept with its folding rear seat backrests enables the driver and passengers to adjust the luggage space individually to their personal requirements. And last but not least, the coupé tailgate in the sporting rear end combines superior suitability for daily use with stylish elegance.

Porsche has developed superior and up-to-date power units for the Panamera again reflecting all the qualities typical of the brand – the V-engines within the engine compartment come with six and eight cylinders and range in power from 300 to 500 bhp. Some of the engines use turbocharger technology, Direct Fuel Injection making them both fuel-efficient and powerful all in one. The flow of power to the wheels goes either through a manual six-speed gearbox or the new seven-speed Double-Clutch Gearbox, the so called Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK).
In addition to sporting rear-wheel drive, the top version of the Panamera comes with even more sophisticated all-wheel drive, which is also available for the other versions as an option. As a further highlight, Porsche is preparing a particularly fuel-efficient version of the Panamera with hybrid drive. Further details on the engines, transmissions, performance, prices and equipment will be disclosed next spring.

The Porsche Panamera will be built at Porsche's Leipzig Plant, where a production hall measuring some 22,000 square metres or almost 237,000 square feet and a logistics centre are currently under construction. While the engines featured in the Panamera are built at Porsche's Main Plant in Zuffenhausen, the painted bodyshells will be supplied by the Volkswagen Plant in Hanover. The Leipzig Plant will then assemble the Panamera for final delivery, with an annual sales target of some 20,000 units. Porsche is once again cooperating largely with German suppliers in the production of the Panamera, with some 70 per cent of the car's overall value being created domestically. Hence, the Panamera is most definitely a car "Made in Germany".

The Panamera will be making its world debut in spring 2009 and the first models will be at dealers worldwide in late summer of next year.
