Flashing licence plate during hard-braking

August 7th 2007 05:27
Flashing LED brake lights

A lot of the time when I have to brake abruptly in heavy traffic or in hazardous conditions, I tend to switch on my hazard lights to give the driver behind me as much of a warning as possible.

Sure, I have no way of proving whether the flashing hazards actually minimises the chance of a collision, but I do feel that it increases awareness of the following driver.

Whilst this practice of switching on the hazards under hard, sudden braking seems a rarity in Australia, I have witnessed many drivers do it overseas in the US and in Asia.

A company in the US by the name of Woodford Industries has created "Sudden Stop" - a flashing number plate frame using ultra-bright LED technology that flashes brightly for around three seconds when you slam on the brakes.

"Sudden Stop" uses highly sensitive measurement devices and microprocessors that can tell whether you have slammed your brakes or used your brakes normally.

Best of all, the number plate frame runs on batteries and is not part of your car’s electrical or braking system so there are no wires to attach. All that is required for installation is a simple screwdriver.

I think this is a fantastic piece of kit that promotes safety and driver awareness and should work better than flashing hazard lights. Best of all is the ease of installation!

That's a cool idea. Anything that improves safety can't be a bad thing, especially people are increasingly inconsiderate and cranky when they drive these days because of traffic and congestion.

Plus if you run up the back of someone with one, you'll be attracted to their licence plate so you can easily remember it for insurance purposes.

*giggle*
