Facelift: 2009 Toyota Yaris

October 31st 2008 05:30
2009 Toyota Yaris

The popular Toyota Yaris has been given a makeover for the 2009 model year with increases in the active safety, comfort and convenience of both hatch and sedan variants plus a host of cosmetic upgrades.

Exterior facelift changes for Yaris hatch includes new headlamps with increased reflector area for greater illumination, redesigned front and rear bumpers, a new front grille and new taillights incorporating LED technology.

The hatch also boasts a new wheel cover design on the 'YR' model and a new eight-spoke 15-inch alloy wheel design on the up-spec 'YRX'.

Three new colours have been added onto the palette for the Yaris hatch - Graphite, Lustre (Silky Gold Mica Metallic) and Sting (Yellow).

The sedan variant now has a new block-pattern radiator grille, and newly adopted side turn indicators in the exterior mirrors, a new wheel cap design for the 'YRS' and new eight-spoke alloy wheels for the 'YRX'.

Santorini and Tidal Blue are two new colours available for the Yaris sedan only.

Interior-wise, 2009 Yaris models have improved Jacquard-weave seat trim, with individual Dark Grey patterns for 'YR' and 'YRS' hatch, YRX hatch, and both 'YRS' and 'YRX' sedan. The Yaris hatch now has a "warm silver" look on the centre cluster of all models, and chrome rings on the air conditioning registers of the 'YRS' and 'YRX' models. Telescopic steering column adjustment on entry-level 'YR' hatch is also available as standard as is illumination for the steering wheel-mounted audio switches on Yaris YRS and YRX hatch - both of which are great comfort upgrades.

Fuel consumption for 1.3-litre Yaris manual models is 6.0 litres/100km with CO2 of just 141grams/km based on the official combined cycle. Figures for the 1.5-litre manuals are 6.1 litres/100km and 145 g/km. The manual versions of the Yaris have been awarded the maximum five-star rating on the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide.

Only petrol models attract five stars. Toyota, with Yaris and Prius, is the only manufacturer to achieve the maximum rating with cars using regular unleaded petrol.

In all, Toyota offers 16 Yaris models: 12 hatchback and four sedan models made up of three-door and five-door hatchback models, and four-door sedan, all with the choice of manual or electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Entry prices for Yaris remain at $15,190 for the 3-door 'YR' and $16,390 for the 5-door 'YR', both with manual transmission. Prices on all 'YRS' and 'YRX' hatch models have been reduced between $50 and $250 while sedan variants have had price increases of $200-$400

All Yaris grades have an optional Enhanced Safety Pack, with additional SRS airbags.

Toyota Aygo Crazy

Japanese car giants Toyota is set to debut a one-off concept - designed for pure driving fun as they say - at the London Motor Show next month.

The Toyota Aygo Crazy is based on the Aygo sub-compact (think Yaris but even smaller) and boasts an engine transplant, a wild wide-body bodykit, and absolutely no electronic handling aids, power steering or ABS whatsoever.

Power comes from a rear-mounted 1.8-litre turbocharged VVT-i engine good for over 147 kW and 240 Nm - staggering numbers when you compare them with the stock performance figures of 51 kW and 93 Nm, not to mention the weight of the Aygo at just 1,050kg!

Other tidbits include customised, hand-crafted bodywork, sports suspension from the MR2 roadster and an interior boasting purpose-built sports seats with four-point safety harnesses, a full roll cage and trimmings by specialist coachtrimmers O'Rourke.

The London Motor Show takes place between July 23 - August 3, 2008.

The Official Toyota Press Release:

'AYGO CRAZY' CONCEPT CAR TO MAKE WORLD PREMIERE AT LONDON MOTOR SHOW

KEY POINTS

* A one-off concept designed for pure driving fun
* Built to be driven, not just for show
* Rear-mounted engine generates 200 DIN hp and 240Nm of torque
* Hand-crafted bodywork and 17-inch alloy wheels
* World debut at next month's British International Motor Show

Aygo Crazy is the perfect antidote to all those wild concept cars that look great on the show stand but never turn a wheel. It is a unique machine that has been developed from the start to deliver no-holds-barred maximum driving pleasure, an unforgettable, fun experience.

Making its public debut at the British International Motor Show in London, Aygo Crazy is a one-off model, a "shopping supercar" that takes Aygo's essential qualities to the limit. Owing more to the spirit of Group B rallying rather than D1 drifting, this is a car that is all about the joy of driving: with no electronic handling aids, no power steering and no ABS, it is like a kart with doors and a roof.

Recognisably an Aygo, it clearly packs more muscle with its custom-made body, 17-inch alloys and beefy Goodyear 225/45 rubber. There is even a direct link to Toyota's sporting heritage as Aygo Crazy's carbon fibre rear wing is a part taken directly from the 200mph race cars in the American Champ Car series.

Aygo Crazy is fettled with the Toyota 1.8 VVT-i unit that powered the final generation Celica and MR2 Roadster, rear-mounted and driving the rear wheels through the Roadster's five-speed manual gearbox. The addition of a Toyota Motorsport turbo conversion kit boosts power output to 200DIN hp and torque to 240Nm.

Compare the performance to the 68 DIN bhp and 93Nm mustered by the standard road-going Aygo and you gain some idea of just what a different kind of machine this is.

To cope with the greater engine performance, a bespoke cooling system has been designed, with a huge, front-mounted aluminium radiator – ideal for those endless, tyre smoking, crowd pleasing donuts.

Weighing in at just 1,050kg, Aygo Crazy is capable of 127mph (est), but speed is not its defining quality: this is a machine that exists to be responsive and alive to the driver's commands, to put smiles on the faces of those inside and outside the car.

The suspension is from the MR2 Roadster, with MacPherson struts front and rear. Adjustable Tein dampers sharpen dynamic performance and the front and rear track are one inch wider than on a standard Aygo.

The cabin, finished by specialist coachtrimmers O'Rourke, features purpose-built sports seats with four-point safety harnesses and a full roll cage.

With its bold Aygo Crazy decals and T2 4YGO (turbocharged, two-seat Aygo) number plate, Aygo Crazy will be hitting the show circuit – and the open road – this summer, proving that while this Aygo may be crazy, it's a memorable madness.
