WRX STi vs Evolution X

The following video clip from cult Japanese car DVD magazine, Best Motoring International, is pure automotive pornography for fans of the Subaru WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution series.

This latest clip features the new generation WRX STi and Lancer Evolution (X) against their predecessors and the results are quite interesting.

Featuring the legendary drift-king Tsuchiya-san behind the wheel of the new STi and a bunch of ex. and current JGTC drivers behind the wheel of a Lancer Evolution X (5MT), Lancer Evolution X (SST), WRX STi sedan and Lancer Evolution IX GSR, this is one heck of a battle between the Japanese rally kings.

Subaru WRX STi Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

One of the most eagerly awaited motoring match-ups of 2008 is between the Japanese rally kings - the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

NihonCars.com, based in Tokyo - the heartland of 'JDM' - has taken first dibs at comparing the two rally monsters back-to-back. Enlisting the help of 5 times All Japan Gymkhana champion Masaki Nishihara, here's what they had to say about the performance credentials of these two iconic Japanese sports cars.

Such a title is probably having you wondering if you clicked on the right review, but the facts are here, you cannot honestly consider those 2 vehicles as "sportscars" anymore, but rather some "Sports Family Sedans".
Technically speaking, both cars are faster than their own predecessor, but most of what made each so famous seems to be gone... the kick in the *ss effect when you hit the throttle? Gone. The mind-blowing braking abilities? Gone. The raging noise of the engine? Gone. The fun? Gone, The sensations? Gone.

So the face-off begins in a rather disappointing fashion with NihonCars lamenting the loss of 'rawness' from both the STi and Evo. While it's a legitimate assessment, cars today just aren't made like they were in the 90s - consumers demand a compromise between performance with at least a certain degree of comfort and both manufacturers have had to adhere to these changes in order for them to sell the product.

They also felt that with the hefty increases in weight - STi (1470kg) and Evo (1420kg) - the four-cylinder 2-litre turborcharged engines were no longer as adequate to propel these cars as they were in previous versions.

In conclusion:

Do you remember the VW Golf GTI which, generation after generation was trading performance for comfort (until things changed for good recently again)? Well it now seems that our 2 beloved Japanese car manufacturers are hit with the same disease. The best example has to be the "ECO" mode on the Impreza WRX STi; it has the ability to turn what is commonly known as a sportscar into a snail.
We, at NihonCar, are huge fans of the Evo 9 and Impreza RA-R, and this is why we have been very disappointed by those two new generations which seem to slip down the hill to feel more and more like a Lexus minus the real interior comfort.
If we had to choose, we'd pick the Evo X because the handling and style are better.

On paper, things don't sound too promising but we doubt that it would deter prospective buyers. The STi and Evo have both grown up, as have the owners of previous versions and this could just be the car for them.

For those missing the spice of the previous version, well, there's always aftermarket tuners to turn to!
